🗣️ IELTS SPEAKING BAND 7 SAMPLE ANSWERS Want to boost your IELTS score? Let's look at what a Band 7 answer sounds like! It's all about fluency and using varied vocabulary. Key principle: Think natural, not perfect. Example: "What kind of hobbies are popular in your country?" Band 7: "Well, um, I think it really depends on the age group. For younger people, gaming is definitely popular. You know, video games, esports... that sort of thing. But for older generations, I'd say gardening is quite common, and, uh, maybe watching TV, or spending time with their families. I guess it also depends on where you live - city or countryside." Notice how the answer uses hesitation ("um," "you know"), fillers ("I guess"), and phrases like "it really depends" to sound natural. It also provides a range of relevant vocabulary like "esports," "generations," and "countryside" showcasing a good breadth of language. Another example: "Describe a time when you received bad news." Band 7: "Okay, so, a while ago, I remember getting a call about my university application. I was really hoping to get into this particular program, it was my dream, actually. And, uh, the person on the phone told me I hadn't been accepted. I was pretty devastated, to be honest. I just felt all my hard work had been for nothing. I spent the rest of the day feeling really down, but then I started looking at other options. It wasn't the end of the world, you know?" Shows clear use of narrative language and emotional vocabulary ("devastated," "feeling really down"). Focus on using past tenses correctly and narrating the experience in a chronological order. Key Points: • Aim to speak at a natural pace, using pauses and fillers like "um," "you know," or "I mean" where appropriate. This makes you sound less robotic. • Use a wide range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, including synonyms and paraphrasing. Don't just repeat the same words. • Practice regularly to improve your fluency and confidence. Record yourself speaking and identify areas for improvement. 🗣️ IELTS SPEAKING BAND 7 SAMPLE ANSWERS Want to boost your IELTS score? Let's look at what a Band 7 answer sounds like! It's all about fluency and using varied vocabulary. Key principle: Think natural, not perfect. Example: "What kind of hobbies are popular in your country?" Band 7: "Um, that's a good question. I think… well, football is definitely huge, especially among men. But also, things like gardening and, you know, cooking are getting more popular, particularly with younger people now that they're spending more time at home. So, yeah, a mix, really." Notice the use of natural fillers like "um" and "you know," showing it's spontaneous. The vocab includes "definitely huge," "getting more popular," and "a mix, really" demonstrating a good range. Another example: "Describe a time when you received good news." Band 7: "Okay, so, I’m going to talk about when I found out I got accepted into my university of choice. I’d applied to a few different places, but this one was really where I wanted to go. I remember checking my email and seeing the acceptance letter. I was absolutely over the moon, I literally jumped up and down! I called my parents straight away to tell them, and we went out for dinner to celebrate. It was just such a relief after all the hard work I’d put in." Shows narrative coherence and use of idioms like "over the moon" and descriptive language. Focus on detailing a specific experience, rather than generalising. Key Points: • Don't aim for perfection, aim for natural conversation. Little pauses and fillers ("um," "you know") are completely fine. • Use varied vocabulary and idioms appropriately to demonstrate your range of English. • Practice speaking regularly and record yourself. This helps you identify areas for improvement and get comfortable speaking under pressure. Follow us: Advanced English | Beginner English | Instagram | YouTube

🗣️ IELTS SPEAKING BAND 7 SAMPLE ANSWERS Want to boost your IELTS score? Let's look at what a Band 7 answer sounds like! It's all about fluency and using varied vocabulary. Key principle: Think natural, not perfect. Example: "What kind of hobbies do you enjoy?" Band 7: "Well, um, I'd say I'm quite into photography, actually. I mostly do it as a hobby, you know, just taking pictures of landscapes and, like, street scenes when I'm travelling. It's a nice way to, sort of, unwind and capture memories. I wouldn't say I'm a pro, but I definitely enjoy it." Notice the natural hesitation markers ("um," "you know," "like," "sort of"), the range of vocabulary ("landscapes," "street scenes," "unwind," "capture memories"), and the good structure with a clear explanation of the hobby and its benefits. Another example: "Describe a time when you received bad service in a restaurant." Band 7: "Okay, right. So, this happened a few months ago. We went to this new Italian place, and honestly, the food was pretty good, but the service was just awful. We waited ages for our drinks, and then when the food finally arrived, they got my order completely wrong. I was pretty annoyed, to be honest, but I tried to stay polite. The waiter wasn't particularly apologetic either, which made it worse. Eventually, they brought the correct dish, but by then, I'd kind of lost my appetite. It definitely put a damper on the evening." Shows natural storytelling, use of idiomatic language ("put a damper on the evening"), and coherent development of the experience. Focus on maintaining a natural flow of speech, even when describing a negative experience. Key Points: • Don't try to sound like a dictionary. Use everyday language and natural fillers. • Use a variety of vocabulary to express yourself clearly and precisely. • Practice speaking regularly to improve your fluency and confidence. Key principle: Think natural, not perfect. Example: "What are your hobbies?" Band 7: "Well, I've got a few hobbies, actually. I really enjoy playing the guitar in my free time. I'm not, you know, a rock star or anything, but I find it really relaxing. Uhm, and I also like hiking, especially on weekends when I have more time. It's a great way to escape the city and get some fresh air, which is something I definitely need sometimes." Notice the use of fillers like "Well," "Uhm," "you know," and natural phrases like "escape the city" and "get some fresh air." The answer flows naturally and addresses the question adequately. Another example: "Describe a time when you received good advice." Band 7: "Okay, let me think. Right, I remember once, I was really struggling with a project at university. I was feeling completely overwhelmed, to be honest. My professor, Dr. Smith, noticed I was stressed, and he gave me some really helpful advice. He told me to break the project down into smaller, more manageable tasks. He also suggested creating a detailed timeline. And you know what? It actually worked! It made the whole thing seem less daunting, and I ended up finishing the project on time. I was so grateful for his advice." Key Points: • Don't aim for perfection; focus on expressing yourself naturally and confidently. • Use varied vocabulary to describe your ideas and experiences.
