President Donald Trump’s expansion of executive power, including his unprecedented push to send troops into U.S. cities to combat crime and his attempt to seize control of aspects of the economy, has left Americans uneasy, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll found. The findings suggest that a substantial majority of the public favors limits on presidential power and does not approve of Trump’s efforts to shatter longstanding norms.

“President Trump has not convinced most Americans that there is an emergency in this country that requires greatly expanded presidential power to address,”

said David Hopkins, a political scientist at Boston College. Over the last few weeks, Trump's administration has taken control of the Washington, D.C., police department and deployed National Guard troops to the city, claiming that crime there is out of control. He has discussed sending troops to Chicago and New Orleans as well. On crime, only 32% of Americans said they would feel safer with armed soldiers deployed to large cities in their state, the poll found. Zelensky Hints Trump is Out of the Loop. An Unsafe Game “Putin told Trump and U.S. special envoy to Ukraine Steve Witkoff that he intends to occupy Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region in a few months, President Trump is not probably aware of it,” Zelensky said in an interview published Tuesday. “That is, he [Putin] says that in three to four months, and this is what he told the Americans, the White House, and President Trump’s representative Witkoff, he said that he would take Donbas in two to three months, maximum four months,” Ukraine’s president told ABC News. Calling the attack “frankly brutal,” Zelensky urged the international community to increase pressure on Russia. “The world must not remain inactive. A response from the United States is needed. Following a high-level meeting with Zelensky and European leaders at the White House on Aug. 18, Trump announced he was arranging a bilateral meeting between Zelensky and Putin. The Kremlin, however, has shown no willingness to commit to an in-person meeting between the two leaders.
