in 1950, the U.S. Navy sprayed bacteria over San Francisco - on purpose...
But the government wouldn't poison its own people... right? Wrong. In 1950, the U.S. Navy conducted a secret biological warfare test over San Francisco without public knowledge or consent.
They released Serratia marcescens and Bacillus globigii, bacteria that the government claimed at the time were "harmless simulants". It was dispersed from a navy ship offshore and was released through specialized spray equipment. The spray created microscopic particles (small enough to be inhaled) and it was carried by fog and wind. It was inhaled by the entire city over the course of multiple days.
San Francisco residents went about their lives completely unaware they were part of a military experiment.
Within days, Stanford Hospital recorded a sudden spike in rare Serratia infections. Doctors were baffled by how such an uncommon bacterium appeared simultaneuously in so many patients.
San Francisco was chosen intentionally. Fog helps aerosol particles remain suspended, and coastal winds reliably push air from the ocean into the city. A dense population meant measurable exposure.
Navy testing later concluded that "nearly the entire population of San Francisco was exposed.
Decades later, military documents were declassified, Operation San Francisco was revealed as one of 239 U.S. biological field tests. The Army and Navy acknowledged the experiment. This was not an accident. It was intentional testing on civilians revealed only years later through declassification.
If the public wasn't told then, what convinces us we'd be told now about what's happening in our skies?
