| 4 | ✞After being caught with his colleague Aedesius by coastal guards (or bands), they were brought to Axum during the reign of Tazer (Ayzana) and his wife Sophia (Aheyewa). Even if the exact date is not known, it was in the 4th century.✞And though the reason that Frumentius came was not for evangelization of the Gospel, he used to preach in Axum around the palace. At that period, the torch of Christianity, which had already been ignited by the Eunuch, St. Bakos, had been spreading in the country unnoticed (like an underground movement) and so Frumentius was not troubled. Particularly, because he had taught the youths (Ezana and Sizana) from their childhood, things became successful – went smoothly.
✞When the Emperor Tazer passed away, both youths sat on the throne (as they were brothers). And they sent Frumentius to Egypt so that he would bring them a bishop and the rite of baptism together with books. Then, the Apostolic St. Athanasius of Alexandria named Frumentius as Salama, ordained him a bishop and sent him with holy vessels/vestments and books.
✞And when Abune Salama returned to Ethiopia, he administered baptism beginning with the Co-Emperors. Ezana and Sizana became Abreha (meaning shone) and Atsbeha (meaning made it to dawn - lighten) respectively. After that, the Emperors, the Bishop Abune Salama and the Archpriest Amram (Emberem) worked together in a great service to expand Christianity.
✞✞✞The contributions of Abune Salama.
1. He brought the Bishopric See/Office and Priesthood from the right source (apostolic source).
2. He expanded Christianity and baptism in our country.
3. He translated Holy Books from foreign languages.
4. He started the monastic life in Ethiopia.
5. He built Churches.
6. He improved the Geez language. He
A - made it to be written from left to right.
B - added letters (declension).
C - and changed the order of the alphabets so they can be written like ሀ -> ለ -> ሐ -> መ . . . from አ -> በ -> ገ -> ደ . . .
✞And he was an example to the people with the holy life he had. As his hagiography states, “And for these, he was named the illuminator” so for the above reasons he was, is and will be called, “The Illuminator”. Finally, in the year 352 A.D he departed after fighting the good fight. The Saint was consecrated as a Bishop for Ethiopia on this day.
✞✞✞May the God of the Saints preserve us in their persistence. And may He grant us from their blessings.

✞✞✞ Salutations to God ✞✞✞
(Translated by Mhr. Esuendale Shemeles with the permission of Dn. Yordanos Abebe) | 1 288 |
| 5 | ✞St. Titus was born in a city called Crete in Asia Minor in the 1st century. His linage is from both Israel and Greek. Since, the worship of God was not practiced in the area, his family and he worshipped stars.
✞Because the people of the region thought salvation was through knowledge (gnosis), they learned Greek philosophy well. St. Titus in his youth entered into the then Greek schools and learned their philosophy and worldly wisdom. In a short time, he became greater to all.
✞Though the Saint did not worship his Creator; he was sincere and kind in his manner. Without knowing the reason, he used to feed, quench the thirsts and take care of the poor. God did not want the goodness of this person to go to waste and one day He was revealed to him.
✞In a vision, he [St. Titus] heard from Whom he did not understand, “O Titus! Fight for the salvation of your soul. This world will pass.” Thus, he woke up from his sleep and was shaken. He did not know what to do. And all those to whom he spoke to could not understand any of it as well.
✞For some time, not finding an answer, he lived by contemplating the matter in his heart. However, suddenly, at that time, a tiding was heard from Jerusalem. People told Titus, “Jesus, Whom they call Christ, God Incarnate - Who came down to earth, is preaching [in Jerusalem] about the Kingdom of God.”
✞He then asked, “What else did you see?” And they replied, “The sick are healed by His hands. The dead are raised. The blind see. The lepers are cleansed. And many other miracles are being done.” And the then Governor of Crete, who was also a philosopher, wanted to inquire about what he had heard of Christ.
✞Because he was not able to go, he said, “Find me a discreet and wise man” and sent his servants. Thus, they brought before him Titus as there was none better than him in the surrounding. The Governor then said, “Inquire into the matter carefully and bring me an answer whether be it true or false” and sent Titus.
✞St. Titus hurriedly rose up and went to Jerusalem. When he entered into the city, he searched and found our Lord.
1. He saw our Lord Christ dispelling diseases, and casting out demons with His authoritative Word and understood, it was not the work of a mere man (a creature, a mortal).
2. He also found the teachings of our Lord far advanced and more mystical than Greek philosophy as the starting and ending point of Greek philosophy was the flesh/temporal. However, the teachings, through the sweet words of our Lord, were of heaven and everlasting. Now, the mystery of what he saw and heard in his vision that said, “Fight for your soul” was grasped.
✞And because of this, he did not waste any time. Immediately, he believed and became His disciple. And our Lord added him to the 72 Disciples. Then, when the Governor of Crete inquired, “Why are you delayed?” He [St. Titus] sent him [the Governor] a letter about all the things he saw and added that he was not going to return [to Crete].
✞After this, St. Titus learned under our Lord for three years, received the Holy Spirit [gifts of the Holy Spirit] on the Day of Pentecost and preached the Gospel all around Asia Minor for 8 years. And when St. Paul became a believer, he [St. Titus] became his disciple and preached for 25 years.
✞After St. Paul was martyred, he returned to Crete, converted the people, baptized them and built a Church. And when his time came, he ordained preachers and priests; and after blessing them, he passed away. Today is the feast day of the Holy Apostle’s translation.
✞✞✞Abune Salama the Illuminator✞✞✞
✞It is believed that the Saint was Greek in origin but grew up in Syria. Frumentius was Abune Salama’s former name. Though the way he arrived into Ethiopia seemed to be accidental, within it, there was the will of God. | 1 069 |

✞✞✞Saint Thomas the Apostle✞✞✞
=>St. Thomas, who was one of the 12 Apostles, is known for having endured many tribulations and for placing his hand on the side of our Lord (which was pierced by a lance).
✞St. Thomas like the other Apostles was born in Israel and was raised according to the rites of the Old Testament. He joined the Sadducees while he was just a youth. The Sadducees were a sect that did not believe in the resurrection of the dead. And when our Savior, Jesus Christ, started His ministry, St. Thomas left the sect and followed our Lord. And our Lord appointed him as one of the 12 Apostles and changed his previous name that was Didymus to Thomas.
✞And at the time, when our Lord went to raise Lazarus, St. Thomas showed his love [for Christ] by uttering, “Let us also go, that we may die with Him” while the other Apostles insisted [not to go] by saying “Stay, because the Jews want to kill You”. (John 11:16)
✞[And after the resurrection of the Lord,] Thomas, who was not there when our Lord revealed His resurrection to His disciples, said [to the other Apostles] “I will not believe unless I see”. And his reasons [for saying that] were:
1. Because it did not seem to be true to him for the great love he had for our Lord.
2. Also because he thought that he was just going to preach the resurrection from what he had heard which won’t be like the other Apostles as they will be preaching “We have seen the Lord’s resurrection”.
✞Though, for the time being, the Lord had revealed Himself and rebuked him [for his doubt], later he expressed his whole faith saying, “My Lord and my God” attesting to the fact that he was allowed by the Lord to touch His side. This hand of the Apoatle is still extant to this day. It is honorably found in the Church of India.
✞And after the Apostles received the Holy Spirit and allotted dioceses amongst themselves, India and its surrounding lands became the lot of St. Thomas. It is after this that his acts, which we can’t finish listing, took place. And for the diligence that the Saint had, our fathers honor him saying, “The one who adorned India”.
✞St. Thomas, while he was trying to convert the King, Lucianus (Lukios), and the people of the country, he was skinned alive while they stretched him on the ground with nails. And then, they, after filling his skin with sand, sewed and made him carry it. And on the roads [where he walked carrying it] they put salt on his flayed body, thence sheep came and took bites from his flesh. And for this reason, the scholars have said,
“When the era is evil, all turn to be malicious
Thus, to Thomas, the sheep became like wild beasts”
✞However, later on, all believed and were baptized, because he raised by his flayed skin the wife of the King that had died from falling off a higher structure.
✞Like St. Paul, the Holy Apostle struggled for the Gospel and the Church, sometimes with wisdom and sometimes with trials. And without interruption he had preached from India to our country, Ethiopia, for 38 years.
✞And finally, on 72 A.D, he departed as a martyr. His tomb and his holy hand [as mentioned earlier] are still extant in India. Except Protestants, all the world venerates and commemorates him. Today is the feast of the translation of the Holy Apostle.
✞✞✞Saint Titus the Apostle✞✞✞
=> St. Titus, the disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ, is one of the 72 Disciples. He has not been forgotten that much [as the rest of the 72]. Even if the Saint’s chronicles are not spoken of, his name is remembered since one of the 14 letters, which have been written by St. Paul was addressed to him. St. Paul mentions him repeatedly in his letters in a good light.=>Hence, who is Saint Titus? | 1 069 |

| 14 | ✞After this, St. Luke raised the level of the austerity of his strife. First, he lengthened his fast from one day to 3 days. A bit later he started to fast for 7 days and only ate on Sundays.
✞He always used to celebrate the Divine Liturgy on Sunday. And after receiving himself from the Holy Eucharist he used to distribute the Holy Body and Honorable Blood to communicants. Then returning to his cell, he used to eat only a pakusima (korbana). Pakusima is a small portion of a bread.
✞Beyond that he used to girdle his waist with a metal chain, pray with his whole spirit and prostrate. And while he lived in such a manner, he became envious of the life of Abba Agathon the Great. And to avoid the sin of slander or evil words that came out of one’s mouth, he prepared a round stone and placed it in his mouth.
✞That stone only came out once a week for partaking from the Holy Eucharist. No matter what anybody did or said to him, he did no respond. And such a strife is called, “Silence and Patience.”
✞Silence is sanctifying the tongue while patience is quietening the heart and edifying it. If both are quiet, the body becomes still of the waves of sin. Exegetes have expounded that why our Savior Christ, to Whom is glory, said to Mary, “Mary hath chosen that good part” during His ministry was to imply to this gift which she had. (Luke 10:42, The Anaphora of St. Mary No. 163)
✞St. Luke then lived in such a way for 3 years. Then, God sent His Holy Angel and guided him to Constantinople. He went following a cross of light towards the east.
✞There, he began his strife that he is known for to this day. He found near Constantinople a pillar and scaled it. And there, he did as the Saints Abba Simeon and Abba Agathon did that had come before him.
✞Because it was not possible to sit on the pillar the first strife was to stand without rest. Beyond that he was the leader and teacher of the faithful of the area. Many people used to come from different nations after hearing his fame.
✞He continued to convert the unbelievers with his sermons and preserved the believers. There was none who was not changed whom he had taught. And the reason was because he was filled with the Holy Spirit and demons were not able to stand there.
✞And in those days, he was loved by the bishops, priests, the faithful and the rulers as he was their consoler when they were sad, their healer when they were sick and their intercessor when they transgressed against God. And in such a strife St. Luke stayed on the pillar for 45 years. Thus, until today he is called “the Stylite”.
✞And when God wanted to give him rest, he called his disciple and sent him to the city. And the rulers, bishops, faithful and priests of Constantinople that had heard the message came hurriedly but they found him departed on Tahisas 15 (December 24).
✞Weeping and in chants they took his body and reached Constantinople. There, on this day, they entombed him with the fathers (in the tomb of the fathers). He is to this day an honored father in the area!
✞✞✞May the God of Saint Luke not deprive us of consoling and remembering fathers. And may He grant us from the Saint’s blessing.

✞✞✞On this day we commemorate Saint Luke the Stylite✞✞✞
✞✞✞In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God. Amen!✞✞✞
✞✞✞Saint Luke the Stylite✞✞✞
=>From the fathers that are known with the title “the Stylite” four take precedence. And they are:
*St. Simeon the Stylite
*St. Agathon the Stylite
*St. Daniel the Stylite and
*St. Luke the Stylite.
✞The Ge’ez word “Ze’amd” is what is termed in the East as “The Stylite”. Our term as it is derived from Ge’ez when translated directly means “of the pillar”. And this is (the title is used/added) for 2 reasons.
✞The first reason is because these saints completed their strife praying upon a tall pillar. And the second reason is because these fathers were consolers to the then faithful and monks, teachers and healers while they stood praying without movement just like a pillar.
✞As our country comes first for having many sowah (spirit-borne anchorites) and holy emperors from the [nations of the] world, the saints that fight standing upon pillars are mostly Syrians and Easterners. And on this day, because the Church holds the feast of the Great Saint, Luke the Stylite, let us see a bit from his accounts.
✞St. Luke was born and raised in Persia (present day Iran) and is believed to have been in the Era of the Righteous (from the 3rd to the 6th century). Unlike today, in those days there were many Christians that were strong in that country.
✞And since in the that period, the accounts of the saints were abundant, many used to go to monasteries (beyond the capacities they could accommodate) for asceticism. And Christians that burned with spiritual zeal were numerous.
✞St. Luke from his childhood was grounded in Christianity. And when he was a kid, he did learn well about his faith. And in his youth, because it is a religious duty to labor and eat, he went looking for work.
✞Hence, he enlisted in the military as it was an easily accessible job. Being a soldier is not a work of sin because it is keeping a country and its borders to the extent of sacrificing one’s life.
✞However, some of us are seen doing deeds that are not proper to the title and executing tasks that are neither beneficial to us nor our kinsfolk. And for this, because God will judge heaven and earth, all of us, in the occupations that we are in should live accordingly as the lives of our fathers were like this.
✞St. Luke was a soldier and a Christian. In both of his identities he executed what was expected of him. He aslo inhibited his youthful emotions and continued submitting his body to God.
✞As it is known, a person’s wages and office increase per his work. Though many such works are scant in our days. It is very corrupt in Christendom to award the one who did not work and leave the one who did.
✞May be it was because this idea socked an author that he stated in a verse;
“My country Ethiopia you are a fool and a sucker,
He who died for you was neglected, but he who killed you is left to devour.”
✞[Coming back to our account] St. Luke according to his work was elevated to the rank of a centurion.
✞And St. Luke while he performed his duty as a centurion, was obedient to God and used to read books. And because he daily read the Chronicles of the Saints his heart was indulged in the love of Christ. And he wanted to forsake this world.
✞And the Lord, Who grants good wishes, strengthened his heart and the Saint without having anything, left his post/position and entered the desert. There, as a novice he became the disciple of the fathers. Instead of commanding he became compliant and from being served he became a servant.
✞And the fathers that saw his humility and diligence raised him to the rank of a monk. Again, he continued his service readily. And the fathers that saw his knowledge, insight and holiness had him ordained a priest knowing he would be a good shepherd. | 2 608 |
