The government is set to announce plans to restrict the right to a jury trial in England and Wales in an attempt to turn around unprecedented backlogs and delays in justice. David Lammy, the deputy prime minister and justice secretary, will lay out the proposals in Parliament later on Tuesday. But he has insisted that juries would remain a "fundamental part of the criminal justice system". It is not clear if the plan - which would end jury trials other than for most serious cases including murder - has been approved by Cabinet or retreated from.

A top police officer took 'early retirement' in order to avoid a disciplinary hearing which found he had pursued a junior female colleague and texted her a picture of his penis. Former chief superintendent Rob Cousen, who rose to become the commander of Greater Manchester Police's Tameside division, snubbed the disciplinary hearing held at the force's headquarters today. At the hearing, it was concluded that he was guilty of gross misconduct and would have been sacked had he not retired a matter of hours before.

A series of genetic tests released this week suggest the notorious murderer was indeed Aaron Kosminski, a 23-year-old Polish barber and one of the Metropolitan Police's main suspects at the time. Kosminski was a Polish-born Jewish immigrant who settled in London's East End after escaping persecution in the late 1800s.

Weight loss injections have been conditionally recommended for treating obesity by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the first time. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the new guidance "recognises that obesity is a chronic disease that can be treated with comprehensive and lifelong care". While he said medication can't solve obesity on its own, the jabs could help millions overcome it - and reduce its associated harms. According to the health agency, more than one billion people around the world are affected by obesity. By 2030, it says that figure will rise to two billion.

IT consultant says he was put through '13 weeks of hell' after being arrested for posing with a gun in a LinkedIn post while on holiday in Florida. Jon Richelieu-Booth posted three images of himself with firearms while staying on private property with friends in the US. However when he arrived back in the UK in August, a police officer visited his house to warn him that concerns had been raised about his account. The 50-year-old said he offered to prove that the pictures had been taken in the US - where owning or shooting guns are legal. Officers told him it was not necessary. A week later on August 23, the officers returned and arrested him on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.
