| 7 |  ✍️The story of Caroline and FTX makes me very laughable - it's practically a ready-made plot for a TV series. If you're not familiar with this couple and their multi-billion dollar scandal, here's a quick recap. I've prepared this post for you.
Caroline Ellison was 28 when she became CEO of Alameda Research - Sam Bankman-Fried's trading firm that quietly borrowed $14 billion in FTX customer money.
MIT economist's daughter, math olympiad winner, effective altruism believer. Started as a trader in 2018, became sole CEO in August 2022 when her co-CEO quit right before everything blew up. She was also SBF's on-and-off girlfriend, which made the whole thing messier.
November 2022: CoinDesk publishes Alameda's fake balance sheet. Days later, in a video call with employees, Ellison admits they used FTX customer funds to cover Alameda's losses. FTX collapses within a week. She prepared seven different balance sheets to hide the mess from lenders. Knew it was fraud, did it anyway.
December 2022: flips immediately, pleads guilty to seven counts carrying 110 years max. September 2024: testifies against SBF for three days, gets sentenced to two years for "very substantial cooperation." January 2026: walks free after 11 months. SBF gets 25 years, sitting in California until 2044.
