In 1989, the American elite would have been majority right-wing if Jewish elites were excluded (the elite was around 30% Jewish during the 1970s). The immigration of predominantly Catholic European populations had a similar effect; they were significantly more left-wing than their Protestant counterparts. The Immigration Restriction League and other nativists of yore were completely vindicated. Without Jewish and Catholic immigration, it's likely that the Hart-Celler Act (or an equivalent) would never have passed.
