✞And when he heard the matter, he was jubilant because he knew that shedding their blood and receiving affliction for the sake of Christ was better than everything else. Then, he decided to go to the city and shed his blood as well and went.✞There, the soldiers of the Emperor found him and ordered him to sacrifice an offering to the idols. But St. Poemin replied with, “Offerings must be made to our Lord Jesus Christ, to His hypostatic Father and the Holy Spirit only. I will not sacrifice to a creature.” And for this reason, the soldiers took turns and beat him up.
✞They shed his blood. However, when they noticed that he did change his mind, they threw him into prison. Thereafter, they used to take him out daily and beat, burn, torture him with different means and afflict him. However, he answered them with nothing except praising Christ.
✞After they tortured him much and still he said no, they locked him in a dark room. There, he was left for years. Nonetheless, God, Who does things in the proper period, passed those years of persecution and put an end to Diocletian and Maximian.
✞And in their place, He enthroned St. Constantine who loved Christian. Thus, churches were built and those imprisoned for the sake of Christ were released. And at that moment, the faithful came and took up St. Poemin from where he was laid.
✞And at the time, because the Emperor St. Constantine had said, “Gather the bodies/relics of the martyrs, and bring me those who have passed through the tribulation that are able to come”, 72 honored people that were like St. Poemin were found. And the Great Abba Nob (Abanoub) and Abba Zechariah were amongst them.
✞After these fathers blessed the Saintly Emperor and returned, St. Poemin went to Ashmunein and settled at his cell. There, his disciples increased, he continued in his ascetic life and performed many miracles.
✞He healed the sick and removed heretics from the area with his prayers. One day, he heard that the Empress had come to him. And his disciples after entering his cell told him, “Father! The Empress wants [to talk to] you.”
✞However, he replied, “What do I have with an earthly Empress! I will not go out.” Yet, when the disciples stated, “Father! Have compassion upon her, she is in infirmity” he said, “Okay” and went out.
✞The Empress, though she had many soldiers as attendants, she walked bent because of her ill bowls. And when he approached her and whispered the matter behind her illness, she fell to his feet amazed and beseeched him. The matter was as follows.
✞15 years prior, one blessed deacon used to live near the palace. And he, who was called John, used to read to her the Apocalypse of John (Revelations) while he stood. And the Emperor’s servants that were jealous accused the deacon to the Emperor falsely saying, “The deacon is having an affair with your wife”.
✞And the Emperor, who thought the matter was true, ordered his soldiers to drawn John at sea. And the Empress, who heard this, wept for days and her internal organs were damaged and she became ill. Slowly, her abdomen bended. And for 15 years, she wandered as she had not found anyone that could heal her.
✞Later on, when people told her the sanctity of St. Poemin, she came to him. And that was why St. Poemin whispered to her the secret. Then, he performed for her 2 kind things. Firstly, after he prayed, when he kneaded her stomach, she immediately healed and stood straight.
✞Secondly, he told her, “That blessed deacon, John, is not dead. Angels took him out of the sea and have placed him on an island called such and such.” And after she returned, she told the matter jubilantly to her husband.
✞And the Emperor in compunction brought John back from where he was. The fathers then appointed him Archbishop of Rome and he exegeted many texts. St. Poemin, on the other hand, lived in holiness and departed on this day. And he was buried with chants.
✞✞✞May the God of St. Poemin have mercy on us through his prayers. And may He grant us from his patience and let us partake from his blessing.

✞✞✞In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God. Amen!✞✞✞
✞✞✞Saint Abba Poemin✞✞✞
=>Church history was not written in parchment and reed pen (ink and paper), rather it was written with
*the blood of the martyrs as ink
*their bones as pen
*and their skin as parchment. The price the Martyrs have paid for their Faith is great.
✞Hence, they were called “fighters, luminous stars, and candles of the Church” as they have shone while they were afflicted.
✞Though martyrdom had started in the Old Testament and will continue until the Second Coming of Christ, the period that is called “The Era of Persecution/Martyrs” is from 150 A.D to 312 A.D.
✞And as the years in between the 270s and 312 A.D particularly were very cruel the blood of Christians poured on earth. The secret of the Martyrs was nothing else but the Word of the Gospel, the sermons and life of our Lord. (Matt. 10:16, Mark 13:9, Luke 12:4, John 16:1, Rom. 8:35 and Rev. 2:9)
✞The first of the martyrs (protomartyr) was St. Stephen and their seal was St. Peter the Archbishop [of Alexandria].
=>[Coming to] St. Poemin, he is one of the major martyrs of the Church. And in the Church there are saints that are called “Martyrs without shedding blood”. Martyrs that have not shed their blood are those who had received all the affliction of the other martyrs but were not beheaded/slain and lived through the Era of Persecution.
✞For example, many of the 318 Fathers have passed through such a life. Likewise, St. Poemin is a father that have a similar account.
✞If asked, “How did that came to be?”, it was as follows.
✞St. Poemin was born and raised in southern Egypt in the 3rd century. Because the Saint had learned about Christianity from his childhood, all the people trusted and loved him. Though he was not wealthy, he used to do charity, good deeds, with what he had earned from work.
✞In his day, because of his sincerity, it used to be said, “Trustworthiness as Poemin”. All that loved his sincerity wanted him. And in the city, a husband and wife, who had much wealth, took him to their house and made him the steward.
✞And after they learned about his conduct, they placed in his hands all their property and he administered it for them. When they went forth and came back, they used to see him and were glad. Nevertheless, because his heart was immersed in the love of Christ, he did not give attention to what the world offered. And he used to pray.
✞One day, when the husband and wife, the owners of the estate, came, they found that their home was organized as it should be and the keys [to the property] were left for them. However, their acquaintance Poemin was not there. Shocked, they started to look for him but they were not able to find him. Finally, when they heard that he had become an ascetic after entering a monastery, they were grieved greatly.
✞That was because they did not want to part form him. After they wept and while returning to their abode, because the wife said, “No! We should go there and bring him back”, they went to the monastery where he had become an ascetic and begged him so he would return.
✞However, the reiterated, “I have been betrothed to a heavenly nuptial and from now onwards I am Christ’s.” Thus, knowing that they were not successful in convincing him, they returned to their home saddened. Conversely, St. Poemin began his ascetic life in strife.
✞He used to fast, pray, prostrate and obey orders. And while he lived performing the rites of the monastery in the desert, in the world, on the other hand, the likes of Diocletian were slaughtering Christians.
✞And the news of the martyrs slowly reached the monastery where the Saint dwelt.

=>The Hagioghrahpy of Abba Esi (Isi) and the Great Holy Bible tell us that reading the accounts of these and other saints whom we did not mention, doing good in their name and commemorating them has great reward in heaven. (Matt. 10:41, John 4:36, Heb. 6:10)
✞✞✞May the God of the starry Saints keep us from the rebellious generation. And may He conceal us by the shadow of their aid and enable us to gain their blessings.

#Feasts of #Tahisas_8
✞✞✞On this day we commemorate Abune Kiros (Karas), Saint John of Damascus, Abba Samuel of Qualamon, Abune Tekle Alfa, Abba Esi (Isi), Saint Barbara, Anba Marina (Saint Marina) and Saint Gebre Maryam✞✞✞
✞✞✞In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God. Amen!✞✞✞
=>The Holy Church has many Saints that she commemorates on this day and it is difficult to list them all. Nevertheless, let us mention the accounts of the few per the will of the Lord for blessings.
✞✞✞ Abune Kiros/Karas/Cyrus✞✞✞
=>A mouth, which invokes the name of the Saint, is glorified and honored. [Hence] It is better to hasten to gain the blessings of the Saintly Father. Abune Kiros was born in the 4th century and his parents were nobility.
✞In the place of his birth, Constantinople, while he was very young, not longing comfort, he learned the scriptures and about austerity. In the first year of his brother’s (Emperor Theodosius’) reign, because malice became prevalent, Abune Kiros ran away from the city and by crossing lands, he went to Egypt (the Monastery at Scetes) to distance himself from sin and to submit to the Lord.
✞And the search to find him became futile. In addition to that, the Emperor’s son, Christodoulos, also left his groom-ship for asceticism and went to another country. As St. David had said, “. . . the generation of the upright shall be blessed” Ps. 111 (112):2, Abune Kiros was the uncle of Christodoulos the Groom. Abune Kiros then stayed for many years as the disciple of the Great Abune Bebnuda.
✞Later, when a lion devoured St. Bebnuda, Abba Kiros became highly grieved and lamented plunged to the ground saying, “O Lord, why?” And where he laid on the ground, he stayed for 40 years weeping saying, “I won’t rise unless the reason is made known to me”. And for this motive, his body became like the soil and grass grew on it. Then, the Lord appeared and told him the reason, and He returned the Saint’s body to its previous condition.
✞One day, the Saint was much distraught when he heard that the monk who was responsible for the death of St. Bebnuda had hanged himself and died. Then, he held prayers and fasting, lamented greatly, entreated the Lord and brought out the soul of that sinner from hell. And on another period, he saw one monastery in Egypt which was filled by sinners being smitten [by God] and perishing in a given day.
✞Hence, the Saint lamented for 30 years, raised all those that had died, gave penance, made the monastery of the righteous and their lives of love. Because the Saint loved our Lady very much he used to prostrate and weep before her icon several times. And the Theotokos used to appear and bless him.
✞Thereafter, he went westwards and lived for 57 years without seeing anyone [in the wilderness]. Our Lord Jesus Christ (to Whose name’s invocation be prostration) used to visit him daily, and sat to speak to him. Finally, our Lord descended from heaven followed by myriads of angels, saints, martyrs, our Lady the Virgin and St. David.
✞St. David came closer to Abba Kiros and while he played for him the harp, because of tang of the hymn, the Saint’s soul departed from his body in love. Thus, our Lord embraced and kissed him. Then He ascended with him. After which, Abba Bamwa (Pimwah) buried the Saint’s body. Abune Kiros’ figure was straight, his beard was long but I think it is difficult to guess his age.
(Today is the day on which the Saint was born.)
✞✞✞ Abba Samuel of Qualamon (the Confessor)✞✞✞
=>He was a Saintly Father that lived in Egypt in the 5th century in Qualamon
*who is counted with the major Saints
*who had interceded for the angel named Qewstos and had his wings restored
*who was a father that even mediated for an angel
*who was the disciple of Abba Agathon the Great*who was beaten for the upright faith
*who was blinded by heretics on one eye
*who bore many disciples
*who performed miracles
*who established the Monastery of Debre Qualamon
*and who was a father that loved our Lady whole heartedly.
(Today is the day of his departure.)
