✞However, on the anniversaries of the Saint’s passing, the sea – Black Sea [where he was martyred] used to part and the faithful entering the seabed used to receive blessings from his relics. We most of the time call the Saint as “Clement of Rome” to distinguish him from a heretic that is called “Clement of Alexandria”. ✞The honor of the Saint is great! ✞✞✞May the God of the Apostles and the Martyrs veil us from affliction by their tribulation. And may He multiply for us their blessings. ✞✞✞ Annual feasts celebrated on the 29th of Hedar 1. The Holy Martyrs of Christ (All of them.) 2. Saint Peter the Seal of the Martyrs 3. Saint Clement the Apostle (Clement of Rome) ✞✞✞ Monthly Feasts 1. The Birth of our Lord and God Jesus Christ 2. St. Mark of Tormak 3. St. Fikerte Kirstos the Ethiopian 4. St. Zera Kirstos (Righteous and Martyr) 5. St. Arsema the Virgin (Martyr) ✞✞✞“O God, the heathen are come into thine inheritance; thy holy temple have they defiled; they have laid Jerusalem on heaps. The dead bodies of thy servants have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the heaven, the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth. Their blood have they shed like water round about Jerusalem; and there was none to bury them.”✞✞✞ Ps. 78 (79):1-3 ✞✞✞ Salutations to God ✞✞✞ (Translated by Mhr. Esuendale Shemeles with the permission of Dn. Yordanos Abebe)

✞In the New Testament Era, St. Stephen was the Protomartyr, first of their kind, and St. Peter the Archbishop of Alexandria was the Seal of the Martyrs, their last during the Era of Persecution. ✞✞✞Saint Peter the Martyr (The Seal of the Martyrs)✞✞✞ =>This Saint is known by his epithet “The Seal of the Martyrs”. If asked how that came to be, it was as follows. ✞The Saint was from Egypt. And he lived in the 3rd century A.D. His parents, the priest Theodore (Theodosius) and the blessed Sophia had no children. And on Hamle 5 (July 12) they beseeched God. And Sts. Peter and Paul appeared before Sophia and announced that she would bring forth a child (as it was the day of their feast). And when she gave birth, she named him “Peter” per the revelation. ✞And when the Saint was seven years old; his parents gave him to the Church, where he grew up in the hands of the Archbishop St. Theonas. Thence, he became learned, and was an orator, and a kind person. While he served as a deacon and later a priest, after being ordained, St. Theonas passed away and St. Peter was appointed as the 17th Patriarch of Egypt. ✞And the period was an era of malice. And because Christians were killed where they were found and churches were burned, the Saint’s trial was much. He suffered with his flock for 14 years (some say 11) in diligence. ✞He also denounced and excommunicated Arius (who was his student). And he conversed with the Lord many times. And he performed many miracles as well. And in all those days, he never sat on his See. However, later on, the cruel Emperor ordered that he be killed.   ✞And because the people said “Kill us before him”, St. Peter went in hiding and willingly gave his hands to soldiers so that violence will not occur. And that night, he cried out that his blood be the last for the Era of Persecution. And from heaven came word that stated, “Amen! Let it be!” And at that moment, he was beheaded. And the Era of Martyrs/Persecution passed/ended.   ✞✞✞Saint Clement of Rome✞✞✞ =>As the Saint was a great bridge for the Church, how beautiful is the name of this Holy Apostle! And how honored is it as well! St. Clement was the son of St. Qewestos/Caustus (Faustinianus/Fostinus) and St. Akrocia (Macidiana), and had a brother.   ✞His father and mother were nobles of Rome that were among the first Christians of the City who believed through the sermon of St. Peter the Arch-apostle and who spent their wealth by giving to the poor. And when their sons (Clement and his brother) died from poisoning, beseeching the God of Peter, their sons rose. ✞And at one time, because a person troubled Akrocia as Qewestos was not present, she fled with her sons. And on the road, because their ship was wrecked, St. Clement reached Egypt on a piece of wreckage. There, he found St. Peter and became the Arch-apostle’s disciple. ✞And following St. Peter, he travelled ministering across many lands and was part of many wonders. And he was the one that wrote the accounts of the Holy Apostle after St. Luke (Acts of the Apostles). ✞While the Holy Apostles did give St. Clement all their canons, St. Peter gave him the gold, frankincense, and myrrh which the Wise Men brought for Christ. The Saint in particular after all the Apostles departed received the Church and became the 2nd Patriarch of Rome. ✞At the time, because the Book of the Divine Liturgy was not complied, the Holy Eucharist was fractioned per what God had inspired them to pray. Nonetheless, the Saint compiled and wrote the Anaphors of the Lord and the Apostles as we see them today. And his book called in his name, “Clement” (has 8 Chapters/Parts) is counted as part of the 81 Canonical Books of Holy Scripture.✞While the Saint lived in like manner, he fell in the hands of Trajan around the beginning of the 2nd century. And the Emperor accusing the Saint with, “You have taught Christianity” had him greatly tortured and then had him thrown to sea tied to a bolder (some say an anchor). Hence, he died.

#Feasts of #Hedar_29 ✞✞✞On this day we commemorate the Myriads of Martyrs, Saint Peter the Seal of the Martyrs, and Saint Clement of Rome✞✞✞ ✞✞✞In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God. Amen!✞✞✞ ✞✞✞The Holy Martyrs✞✞✞ =>The Church on this day, Hedar 29 (December 8), holds the feast of all the Martyrs. Abba Giorgis of Gasicha, the holy scholar, in the Horologium regarding them states, “Fighters, bright stars, The Church’s lights/candles.” ✞In the 3rd century, the Roman Empire was administered from two cities, Rome itself and Antioch. And the Emperor of the time was Numerianus (Numerian). The princes and his generals included the Saints Basilides (whose sister was the emperor’s wife), Claudius (brother of Numerianus), Victor (Boctor – son of Martha), Macarius (son of Basilides), Abadir (Apater - son of the sister of Basilides), Theodore (the 3 Theodores), Eusebius (son of Basilides), Justus (Yostos - son of Emperor Numerianus), Apoli (Aboli - son of Justus)... and others. ✞The women included the Saints Martha, Sophia, Iraya (Iraja/Herais – sister of Abadir), Theoclea (wife of Justus) and others. And the prime of all these was St. Basilides. Because, at the time, there were many wars taking place in Persia, Quz and with the Berbers, coincidently the Emperor was struck and died in one of the combat. ✞And the throne of Rome became vacant. And it was easy for St. Basilides or the other Saints to take hold of the crown. However, they simply left to do battle with enemies. ✞And in those days, in Egypt, there was a strong man who herded goats and spoke to Satan since his childhood called Agripada (Agrippita). From the children the emperor had bore, two were wicked girls and the younger one, when no one was around, married Agripada (Agrippita) and called him Diocletian.  ✞In Church history, after Satan, there is no name that is as evil [as Diocletian]. He was a man that slaughtered Christians. Seeing her younger sister, the elder, married a beast called Maximian and crowned him as well. And the world fell into the hands of these cruel men. ✞And at that time, all the legions [of Rome] were counted in millions. And when they saw what was done, they were angered. St. Basilides who saw this, gathered the princes, princesses, and the generals and said, “This world with its glory will perish, so let us chose the greater, the Kingdom of Christ.” Hence, all of them, as if they were of one mind, were joyous, and decided to leave behind their earthly honor.   ✞Then, they gathered under one roof and started fasting and praying. They only went outside for alms giving. When the apostate saw this, he brimmed with over confidence, and he found a reason to implement his old plan of eliminating Christians.   ✞And because of the monk named Abba Agagios, he declared, “Churches will be razed and temples (of idol worship) will be opened.” Thus, he raised idols called Apollo and ‘Ardamis’. ✞And because of this declaration, the tribulation of Christians began. *The earth was bathed with blood. *And the Saints had none to bury them. *Some were killed, some were burned, some were imprisoned and some fled. ✞Church history was not written on parchment with a reed pen. Rather it was written using the blood of the martyrs as ink, their bones as a writing implement and their skin as parchment. The price the Martyrs paid for their Faith was grand. ✞Hence, called, “Fighters, bright stars, the church’s lights/candles,” they gave light while they burned and melted. Though martyrdom started in the Old Testament and will continue to the Second Coming of Christ, what is known as the Era of the Martyrs/Persecution was a period from 150 – 312 A.D.✞Particularly, because the years from the 270s to 312 were very harsh, the blood of Forty Seven Million (47,000,000) Christians was shed on earth. And the secret behind [the persistence of] the Martyrs was the Word of the Gospel, the Lord’s sermons and life, and nothing else. (Matt. 10:16, Mark 13:9, Luke 12:4, John 16:1, Rom. 8:35, Rev. 2:9)

(Debre) Qonasle (which means the dwelling place of the foxes) which is 1km from Somat.  ✞And between the two, the Church of St. Mary Magdalene is found. Abba Liqanos after organizing his cell and establishing his monastery, received disciples, and taught them. ✞And parallel to his great strife, he preached for 21 years descending from the Mount. And he translated the Holy Bible and other texts from Syriac and Greek. ✞And when the Saint always went forth for ministry, he always had his staff at hand. He used to lean on it when he preached and prayed. And from his repeated use of the staff, his hand was empaled. And the fathers regarding this said, “From holding a staff, his hand was pierced.” ✞Again, when he raised his hands at night for prayer (in the orans position), they used to be seen lit like a torch. The Righteous, Abba Liqanos, because of his efficacious life received favor not only from God but from the Emperor and the people. And to this day the inhabitants of Axum revere him dearly.   ✞And we (the author) by the mercy of God have went to and seen his monastery. And according to the fathers there, the forest around Debre Qonasle is the abode of many anchorites (sowah/the invisible ones). Though the monastery was esteemed for more than 1,500 years, it was destroyed during the invasion of Fascist Italy in 1928 E.C (1935 A.D). ✞Today as well it is not as it was in its prime. We found only one father in the monastery during our pilgrimage. ✞However, our eyes have seen many great things and we have admired. And as we have heard, it is still today the abode of saints and the resting place of the servants of Axum. The Saint, Abba Liqanos, departed on this day, Hedar 28 (December 7). ✞✞✞Saint Sarapamon the Martyr✞✞✞ =>The Saint was a fruit of the Era of Persecution and a kin to the Apostles. He was born and raised in Jerusalem in the 3rd century. And when his lineage is counted it reaches directly to St. Stephen the Archdeacon and Simeon Cleophas.   ✞The Saint was raised in his childhood per the rites of the Old Testament. However, when he grew and became a youth, he searched [for truth] using his intellect that was given to him by His Creator and decided to become a Christian. And when he asked the then Bishop of Jerusalem, John, with “Baptize me,” the father responded saying, “My son! It would have been my pleasure but your kins, the Jews, will kill me.” ✞And then he added, “It would be better if you go to Egypt and get baptized.” Thus, he left Jerusalem and entered Egypt. After reaching Egypt, the Saint learned from St. Theonas (16th Patriarch of Alexandria) and was baptized. He then entered a monastery and became one of the first monks. Learning asceticism from Abba Anthony the Great, his name became renowned.  ✞And because the fathers loved his strife and purity, they appointed him as the Bishop of Niku (Nakiyos). And during his days in office, he removed the worship of idols from the surrounding. And in turn, he was captured by Diocletian and on this day was killed. And when he was slain, like his great granduncle St. Stephen, his face shone. ✞✞✞May the God of the Holy Fathers indwell in us the fragrance of their sanctity. And may He grant us from their blessings. ✞✞✞ Annual feasts celebrated on the 28th of Hedar 1. Abba Liqanos of Debre Qonasle (One of the Nine Saints) 2. #Feasts of #Hedar_28 ✞✞✞On this day we commemorate Abba Liqanos of Debre Qonasle (One of the Nine Saints) and Saint  Sarapamon the Martyr✞✞✞ ✞✞✞In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God. Amen!✞✞✞ ✞✞✞Abba Liqanos of Debre Qonasle✞✞✞ =>Though the Saint completed his struggles in Ethiopia, he was born in Asia Minor, which was part of the Roman Empire.  Abba Liqanos was one of the Nine Saints. And the Nine Saints though they came from the Roman Empire, hailed from different parts. ✞And it was the Holy Spirit, Who made them one through His Wisdom. The following list shows the reasons behind their unity. 1. Their upright Miaphysite Faith. 2. Their purpose ([seeking] the Kingdom of God) and 3. The monastic life. ✞Including Abba Liqanos’, all the [Nine] Saints’ lineage was from the palace. However, they chose to make theirs the heavenly honor by forsaking the worldly. And these fathers that studied the Holy Scriptures went to the Egyptian deserts from Rome at different times. ✞Abba Pantelewon and Abune Aregawi take precedence [from the Nine Saints] in beginning the ascetic life. As the period was when the Miaphysites were persecuted, the 5th century, the Nine Saints chose flight than renouncing their faith.   ✞And in those days, there was no better country to take refuge in than Ethiopia. Hence, the Saints by the leadership of Aregawi came to Ethiopia in the 470s A.D during the reign of Alla Amidas. ✞And the Emperor received them well as they were guests of God and because he saw their holiness. Later, he allotted them a place to stay in Axum. This place is called “Bete Qetin”. ✞Abba Liqanos and the 8 Saints after coming to our country made their first task learning the language. And after learning Ge’ez well, they started their [evangelistic] activity there in Axum.  And during that time, the kindled missionary activity of Abune Selama, Abreha and Atsbeha including Abune Moses the First was somewhat dwindled and thus Abba Liqanos reignited it with the others.  ✞They preached to the people with the local tongue so that they would become zealous for Christianity. And they preached the Gospel for years by restoring the lapsed and revitalizing the lukewarm. Then, their next task was translating books. ✞Thus, they divided the books [for translation] that they had brought from their nation and translated them to Ge’ez. And by this, they did the greatest favor to our country. And while all these occurred, the fathers prayed and ate as a group. Because the grace of God did not depart from them, there was perfect love amidst them. ✞Then, the task of Abba Liqanos and the others became expanding the monastic life. And to do this it was necessary that they separate. Hence, each traveled to the place that the Holy Spirit led him to. * Abba Pantelewon went to Somat. * Abba Garima (Isaac, or Yeshaq) went to Medera. * Abba Aragawi went to Damo. *Abba Sehma went Tsedia. *Abba Yem’ata went to Garalta. *And the others established monasteries in other areas. *Abba Liqanos by the leadership of the Holy Spirit chose Qonasle (in Tigray). ✞Like his companions, the 8 Saints, Abba Liqanos beyond being a righteous father has done a great deal for our country. Incidentally, the name “Abba Liqanos” was not his first name rather it was a designation that the populous of Axum who were astounded by the Saint’s teaching gave the father. ✞And the fathers have exegeted the name “Liqanos” to mean “The scholarly father”. If asked how that was known, then it is answered from the fact that Abba Pantelewon and Abba Liqanos were the ones that resided around Axum when the Nine Saints completed their ministry as a group and parted to each of their monasteries.✞And the reason for them staying around Axum was that the people and the Emperor had implored the two fathers with, “Do not move far away from us.” Thus, Abba Pantelewon made his abode at a hill named Somat (Endaba Pentelewon - Mai Qoho Hill) above the City of Axum and Abba Liqanos took residence upon Mt.
