Libyan rivals 'co-ordinating over flood relief' The two rival governments in Libya are co-ordinating relief efforts for flood victims, the UN has said. More than 5,300 people died after two dam bursts brought devastating floods to the eastern city of Derna. At least 10,000 people are missing, and tens of thousands more have been displaced. A UN official said that both the eastern and western governments had requested international aid and were liaising with each other. read more

Morocco earthquake: 'We need help from whomever will give it' In the tiny village of Algou, high in the Atlas Mountains, screams came from under the rubble in the terrifying moments after the earthquake. But as the hours passed and with no specialist rescue teams appearing to assist the desperate efforts of the villagers, the screams turned to silence. Three days on, the Spanish firefighters who were the first professional teams to reach the devastated community hoped time had not run out. As they briskly picked their way through caved-in streets and collapsed archways their experience told them there was, however, no hope. read more

Luis Rubiales resigns as president of Spanish FA over Jenni Hermoso kiss Luis Rubiales has resigned as president of the Spanish Football Federation following criticism for kissing Spain forward Jenni Hermoso at the Women's World Cup final presentation ceremony. Hermoso, 33, said the kiss after Spain beat England was not consensual and she filed a legal complaint last Tuesday. Rubiales said he had submitted his resignation to federation acting president Pedro Rocha in a statement. "I cannot continue my work," he told Piers Morgan on his television show. The 46-year-old has also resigned from his position as vice-president of Uefa's executive committee. read more

Ukraine offensive could have only 30 days left - US Army chief Ukraine has little more than 30 days left of fighting before the weather hinders its counter-offensive, the top-ranking US military officer says. Speaking to the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, Gen Mark Milley said colder conditions would make it much harder for Ukraine to manoeuvre. He admitted the offensive had gone more slowly than expected. But he said: "There's still heavy fighting going on. "The Ukrainians are still plugging away with steady progress." read more

Morocco earthquake: Mountain villages plunged into grief As we negotiated the final corner of the winding road and pulled up in the Moroccan mountain village of Moulay Brahim, it was immediately obvious we'd arrived in a community that had been plunged into grief by Friday night's deadly earthquake. An elderly women staggered towards us, wailing, tears falling down her face, holding her head in her hands. A few metres away, a group of young men were sobbing. They'd just discovered their friend was among the dead. "There have been so many deaths today," one of the men told us. read more

Zulu leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi dies aged 95 in South Africa Mangosuthu Buthelezi, a towering figure in South African politics and outspoken Zulu chief, has died at the age of 95. During the racist apartheid regime, he founded the Zulu Inkatha party after becoming disillusioned with the African National Congress (ANC). Thousands were killed in clashes between supporters of the two parties in the early 1990s. But he was later welcomed back into the fold, serving as President Nelson Mandela's minister of home affairs. read more

Morocco earthquake: 820 killed as buildings damaged A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.8 has struck central Morocco, killing at least 820 people, the country's interior ministry says. The epicentre was in the High Atlas Mountains, 71km (44 miles) south-west of Marrakesh, at a depth of 18.5km, the US Geological Survey said. The quake struck at 23:11 local time (22:11 GMT) on Friday. There was a 4.9 aftershock 19 minutes later. People died in Marrakesh and several areas to the south, the ministry said. Many of the victims are believed to be in remote areas. read more

Strong earthquake rocks central Morocco - no casualties reported A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.8 has hit central Morocco, sending people rushing into the streets, but there are no reports of casualties yet. The epicentre was 71km (44 miles) southwest of Marrakesh at a depth of 18.5 km, the US Geological Survey said. The quake struck at 23:11 local time (22:11 GMT). Unverified video clips on X (formerly Twitter) show damaged buildings and rubble-strewn streets. People are seen fleeing in alarm. read more

Hong Kong and southern China battle widespread flooding from record rains Hong Kong and southern Chinese cities are battling widespread flooding as the region endures some of its heaviest rainfall on record. On Friday, streets and subway stations were under water in Hong Kong as officials shut schools and workplaces. The weather bureau said the downpour, which began on Thursday, is the biggest to hit the city in nearly 140 years. Emergency services said more than 100 people had been taken to hospital and several rescues had taken place. read more

Peter Navarro: Ex-Trump adviser convicted of contempt of Congress Former Trump aide Peter Navarro has been convicted of contempt of Congress for refusing to co-operate with an inquiry into alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election result. Prosecutors said Navarro acted "above the law" by ignoring a subpoena from a congressional investigation. He faces up to a year in prison for each of the two contempt counts. Another key Trump ally, former strategist Steve Bannon, was convicted last year of contempt of Congress. Outside the court in Washington DC on Thursday, Navarro said it was a "sad day for America", vowing to appeal all the way to the Supreme Court. "This is the first time in the history of our republic," he said, "that a senior White House adviser, an alter ego of the president, has ever been charged with this alleged crime." read more

Johnny Kitagawa: J-pop agency boss resigns over predator's abuse The boss of Japan's biggest pop talent agency has resigned after finally admitting the sexual abuse committed by its late founder, Johnny Kitagawa. Julie Fujishima resigned from Johnny and Associates on Thursday during a public apology to her uncle's victims. Her departure comes a week after investigators found Mr Kitagawa had "extensively" abused young idols at his pop agency over a six-decade career. He died in 2019, having always denied wrongdoing. He never faced charges. On Thursday, his niece and outgoing chief executive Ms Fujishima acknowledged the abuse for the first time. read more

Aung San Suu Kyi ill but denied urgent care, says son Myanmar's detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi is being denied medical care despite her ill health, her son has said. Kim Aris said the junta ruling the country blocked prison authorities' request for his mother's "urgent care". Sources familiar with the matter told BBC Burmese severe toothaches have left the 78-year-old unable to eat. However, a junta spokesman said Ms Suu Kyi is in good health and gets check-ups from military and civilian doctors. read more

Ex-Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio jailed for 22 years for Capitol riot The Proud Boys' former leader has been jailed for 22 years for orchestrating the US Capitol riot, the longest sentence so far for a ringleader of the raid on the seat of American democracy. Enrique Tarrio was convicted of seditious conspiracy, a US Civil War-era charge, and other counts in May. Tarrio, 39, was not in Washington during the riot, but helped organise the far-right group's involvement. More than 1,100 people have been arrested on Capitol riot charges. read more

Ukraine war: Kim Jong Un 'to visit Putin for weapons talks' North Korea's Kim Jong Un plans to travel to Russia this month to meet President Vladimir Putin, a US official has told the BBC's US partner CBS. The two leaders will discuss the possibility of North Korea providing Moscow with weapons to support its war in Ukraine, the official said. The exact location of the planned meeting is not clear. There was no immediate comment on the report, also carried by other US media, from North Korea or Russia. Sources told the New York Times that Mr Kim was most likely to travel by armoured train. read more

Burning Man: Revellers begin to leave as boggy conditions improve Weather conditions at the Burning Man festival in the US have eased enough to allow revellers to start leaving. Heavy rain had turned the event, held in a desert in Nevada, into a mud bath. The ground is now dry enough for vehicles to drive on it without getting stuck, and pictures show campervans driving out of the event. Some 72,000 people had been stranded at the festival, but organisers say they are ready for a mass exodus from Monday morning, local time. read more

Teacher suicide exposes parent bullying in S Korea On 5 June, Lee Min-so* described in her diary the fear that overtook her body as she entered her classroom to teach: "My chest feels too tight. I feel like I'm going to fall somewhere. I don't even know where I am." On 3 July the primary school teacher wrote that she had become so overwhelmed by the craziness of work she "wanted to let go". Two weeks later, the 23-year-old was found dead in her classroom store cupboard by her colleagues. She had taken her own life. This tragedy has unleashed a wave of anger from primary school teachers across South Korea. read more

Berliners rave against the motorway as extension threatens 20 cultural venues Forget gluing yourself to the road in protest. On Saturday Berliners demonstrated for the climate by blocking a main road with a giant rave. Smoke machines, glitter balls and drinks stands were set up amid the road signs and traffic lights, as thousands of clubbers, climate activists and local residents turned a kilometre stretch of main road in the eastern Berlin district of Friedrichshain into an outdoor dancefloor. With the permission of Berlin authorities, local night-clubs blocked the busy road throughout Saturday afternoon and evening, pumping out music from impromptu stages. read more

Proud Boys leader Joe Biggs sentenced to 17 years for Capitol riot A leader of the far-right Proud Boys has been sentenced to 17 years in prison, one of the longest sentences yet handed out over the US Capitol riot. Prosecutors said US Army veteran Joe Biggs, 38, was an "instigator" of the storming of Congress on 6 January 2021. The former Infowars correspondent was convicted of seditious conspiracy and other charges in May. In court, Biggs pleaded for leniency and expressed remorse for his actions. read more

Andrew Tate: Chats in 'War Room' suggest dozens of women groomed Evidence that dozens of women were groomed into online sex work by members of influencer Andrew Tate's "War Room" group has been uncovered by the BBC. Leaked internal chat logs identify 45 potential victims between March 2019 and April 2020 but the total number is likely to be higher. The texts also appear to show the techniques used by War Room members to exploit possible victims. Mr Tate denies any wrongdoing and says he is prepared to defend his innocence. read more
