#english_usage Despite / In Spite Of ✔️'Despite' means 'without being affected by' or 'notwithstanding'. It introduces a contrasting element. Position: Beginning or middle of a sentence. 🔸Despite the rain, we had a great time at the picnic. 🔸He managed to succeed despite his difficult childhood. ✔️'In spite of' has the same meaning as 'despite' - 'without being affected by' or 'notwithstanding'. 🗣️ IELTS SPEAKING BAND 7 SAMPLE ANSWERS Want to boost your IELTS score? Let's look at what a Band 7 answer sounds like! It's all about fluency and using varied vocabulary. Key principle: Think natural, not perfect. Example: "What kind of hobbies are popular in your country?" Band 7: "Um, well, I think football is definitely the most popular hobby in my country, uh, yeah, without a doubt. Lots of people, especially men, follow football teams, and, you know, play football themselves. I guess, maybe also watching TV and, like, going to the cinema are pretty popular, but football is definitely number one." Notice the use of "um," "well," and "you know" for natural hesitation, as well as phrases like "without a doubt" and "definitely number one" showing good vocabulary range. The answer is also well-structured. Another example: "Describe a time when you received bad service in a restaurant or shop." Band 7: "Okay, so, um, last year, I went to this new restaurant downtown, right? And, the food, when it finally arrived, was, well, not great. But the real problem was the waiter. He was just incredibly rude, you know? Like, he forgot our drinks order, didn't apologize, and then, when we asked for the bill, he just kind of slammed it down on the table. It was, honestly, a terrible experience. And, yeah, I haven't been back since. I mean, I complained to the manager, but, you know, it didn't really change anything at the time. Honestly, the memory still annoys me a little." Shows natural speech patterns with "okay," "so," "um," "right?", "you know?" and story-telling ability. Focus on describing experiences clearly and sequentially. Key Points: • Don't try to sound like a dictionary. Aim for a natural, conversational tone. • Use a variety of vocabulary and idioms to express yourself accurately. • Practice regularly to improve your fluency and confidence.
