Russia has closed the investigation into the downing of an Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) aircraft, sparking anger in Azerbaijan Russia’s Investigative Committee terminated the criminal case into the crash. Azerbaijan’s foreign minister said the decision “raises serious questions,” especially since Russia had previously acknowledged responsibility and promised compensation. In December 2024, an AZAL aircraft crashed near Aktau. There were 67 people on board, and 38 were killed. The plane was flying from Baku to Grozny but was shot down by Russian air defense.
