✞✞✞ Salutations to God ✞✞✞
(Translated by Mhr. Esuendale Shemeles with the permission of Dn. Yordanos Abebe)
He passed away on this day, Tahisas 15 (December 24).
✞✞✞ Saint Eustathius (Ewostatewos) the Teacher ✞✞✞
=>The Apostolic Saint was an Ethiopian (Eritrean) who is renowned for his evangelistic mission on a world stage. In the history of the middle ages of Ethiopia, there is none whose name was celebrated than Eustathius and Tekle Haymanot.
✞The Saint was born around the year 1265 E.C from his parents named Kristos Moa and Sene Hiwot. The first name of the Saint was known as Maiqaba Igzi (Reserved for Christ). He was called Eustathius later on.
✞Because the Spirit of God dwelt in him from his childhood; he did not have a care for the world. He started serving as a deacon after he went to a teacher and learned scripture. And because he was active in his deaconate, the fathers of the time named him as “The Second Stephen.”
✞Then, in his youth, he chose monasticism and made fasting, prayer and prostrations his daily habit. And while he lived in such a manner, our Savior Jesus Christ, to Whose name be glory, came to Abune Eustathius.
✞And when the Saint saw Him upon the Cherubim and in glory, he was shaken. However, our Lord said to him, “My beloved Eustathius! I have chosen you from your mother’s womb. I have ordained you to be an Apostle from Ethiopia to Armenia. And whoever hears you hears me, whoever denies you denies me.” Then, He ascended after blessing him.
✞Praising his Creator for His gift, the Saint was ordained into the priesthood and started preaching. And he became famous throughout the country quickly. He lived by converting unbelievers and baptizing them while moving from place to place, by enabling those who were already believers to steadfast according to the rites of the Church and by establishing monasteries.
✞Including the monastery that is found now in Eritrea, which he established, he has made a great contribution for the expansion of the monastic life. In his monastery, he has taught and has bore many novices including Abba Absadi.
✞Abune Eustathius is particularly known for his effort in making the Sabbath (Saturday) not to be looked down upon. And he was successful. Except recent immodest acts, in our country, both Sabbaths (Saturday and Sunday) were/are kept.
✞Abune Eustathius has embarked on a voyage [to pay homage to holy sites] twice on foot to Jerusalem. His journey was not just to pay respects (to venerate holy sites) but was accompanied by sowing the seed of the Gospel and reaping its fruits. This is because he never neglected his apostolic mission.
✞In his final days, after appointing his disciple Abba Absadi, he went on a new journey. He left for Armenia followed by half of his children and leaving the other half.
✞When they reached the Sea of Jericho, they were not able to find a boat they could cross with. Since he was a wondrous father, he placed his apparel on the sea. And after making the sign of the cross over it, he sat on top of it.
✞And his disciples sat in a circle on the garment laid upon the sea. Then, our Lord descended and stood in their midst. Michael stood on the right and Gabriel on the left as well. The Saint, so started to teach his children and exegete for them.
✞However, because one of the disciples (called Yemane Brihan in the ‘Qene Bet’) doubted, only the garment where he sat ripped and he drowned. Later, the Saint took him out and raised him from the dead. And because of this Abune Eustathius is called “The one who crossed the waves”.
✞Abune Eustathius after preaching in Armenia for years, expanding the monastic life and performing many signs passed away at the age of 80 in the year 1345 E.C. He was laid to rest in the Church of Mar Behnam with great hymns. He is commemorated in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Egypt and Armenia. Today is commemorated the day he crossed the Sea of Jericho (a sea near Jericho).
✞✞✞May the God of the Saints look upon us with His mercy for the sake of our Fathers. And may He grant us from their blessings.

✞✞✞ St. Gregory of Armenia✞✞✞
=>This Holy Father is found in the lists of martyrs, saints, scholars and bishops. He is one of the principal fathers. St. Gregory was a Roman and was born from his Christian parents in the Era of Martyrs (Era of Persecution), the 3rd century.
✞According to what the fathers have told us in Tradition, he was the elder brother of St. Arsema (Hripsime). And according to the Chronicles of the Martyrs, St. Gregory had three duties.
1. Consoling the martyrs including St. Arsema.
2. Learning the teachings of the Church well.
3. And preparing oneself for the trials that were about to come.
✞Because the Saint accomplished all three well; he became the model for the rest. He also made that pure warrior St. Arsema to steadfast and be a leader to the virgins. They prayed, fasted and did ascetic activities living in a monastery until tribulation reached them.
✞This is why we call St. Arsema and St. Gregory righteous. However, later on, because Diocletian, the abode of Satan, attracted by the beauty of St. Arsema said that he wanted to marry her. St. Gregory fled to Armenia taking Christians including the Virgin Arsema.
✞In Armenia, they stayed hidden for some time in one monastery with prayer and fasting until hunger overcame them. And because there was nothing to eat in the area, St. Gregory was forced to leave to the city.
✞There, he was hired as a slave in the palace of Tiridates (the III). And with the money he made, he used to help his kinfolk. But the trials did not leave them. The accursed Diocletian heard that the Saints had gone to Armenia and sent for Tiridates to capture and send them to him.
✞Nonetheless, when Tiridates saw St. Arsema, he could not contain himself because of her beauty and asked her, “I want to marry you”. Nevertheless, the virgin told him, “I am the bride of Christ. It won’t happen.” He then tried to intimidate her. And while she was watched, he slaughtered the virgins.
✞And when he was unsuccessful [with that], he tried to force her to marry him in public but she twisted his hand and dropped him to the ground in front of everyone. And because he was highly embarrassed, he had her whipped, tortured and her eyes taken out. Finally, he had her beheaded and thrown with [the bodies of] the martyrs on a mountain.
✞Immediately after, because St. Gregory’s identity was known, they captured and flogged him until his flesh was no longer. They also burned and afflicted him greatly.
✞Finally, it was decided that he should be buried alive. Then they took him to a latrine pit and buried him alive. But the angel of God descended and opened a hole through which he could breathe. And an elderly Christian woman used to give him flat bread through that hole [every day] and he lived in that manner buried for 15 years.
✞Though his body and the soil fused, he stayed praising his Creator. Later on, when Tiridates and his servants went to hunt, evil spirits altered them to beasts (wild boars).
✞The King’s change into an animal created a great fright in Armenia. And when the King’s sister cried, in a vision, she heard, “You won’t be saved unless you bring forth Gregory from where he is buried”. Straightaway, by the lead of the elderly lady they dug him out.
✞Then, God restored his body. And when he was taken out, he did not seek rest. He collected the relics of St. Arsema and the martyrs, which have had no one to bury, and placed it with honor after 15 years. Then he went to the desert and healed Tiridates and his servants.
✞He reverted them to humanity, and all Armenia was converted to Christianity. However, the legs of the King, were left as a wild beast’s. Finally, St. Gregory was ordained as the Archbishop of Armenia and wrote many books. He was also counted as one of 318 Scholars/Fathers.

✞✞✞“And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.”✞✞✞

✞✞✞ Salutations to God ✞✞✞
(Translated by Mhr. Esuendale Shemeles with the permission of Dn. Yordanos Abebe)
And though, he sent saying, “My children! Take over my kingdom/empire” they said no. Because he was angered, he had St Mar Behnam, St. Sarah and the 40 Saints beheaded.
✞And when they tried to burn their bodies an earthquake took place and many heathens died. And the Emperor was enraged and was transformed to a beast (a hog). At that moment, Abba Mathias came from the desert and healed the Emperor Senharib.
✞And he believed and placed the bodies of his children and the 40 with honor. And in his country Ator (Assur) he built a church in the name of the Mother of Light. Then, he passed away after living as a Christian. But after he was buried a Chaldean King came and invaded Ator (Assur).
✞He killed the Queen (the mother of the Saints) with her infant child. And later, St. Mar Behnam’s soldiers who heard that the invader had said, “Bow down to idols”, came and were martyred being beheaded. And their total number became 170,000.
✞✞✞ Saint Nasahit the Blessed✞✞✞
=>Saint Nasahit was one of the Holy Mothers of the 5th century that had marvelous written accounts. And it was Abba James, Bishop of Awsim, that wrote her hagiography. And he states as follows.
✞“One day while I was in a friary, I heard the door of the monastery being knocked. To know who it was and to open it I went closer”, says the Holy Father.
✞And when he opened the gate, there stood a monk who had covered his face and was looking down. Then the father asked, “Who are you?” to which, the monk replied, “I am a traveler that came from the Monastery of St. Macarius. I want to spend the night here and receive of the Holy Eucharist.”
✞However, Abba James for the safety of the monastery responded with, “Uncover your face and let me see your appearance.” To which the monk replied, “My father! My countenance has darkened because of my sin, please do not inquire into my sins.”
✞Thus, Abba James responded, “I will not let you in” and left him there. But later on, thinking, “May be if he is a hungry man, God will be disappointed in me!” he opened the door and let him in. Then, as the fathers ate dinner, the visitor did not partake. And while they slept, the monk started to pray.
✞And because of the majesty of his voice, all the monks woke up frightened. While the monk sang the Psalms of David, because his voice was thundering like that of an angel’s, the ground trembled. And Abba James was astounded. And after they spent the night in such a manner, because it was Sunday, they began to celebrate the liturgy in the morning.
✞And for his honor, during the Divine Liturgy the visitor read the Epistles and the Gospel. And when he removed his head covering to read the Holy Scriptures because of his splendor and the light from his face, the monks were not able to see him.
✞And after receiving from the Holy Eucharist, when Abba James and the others went to receive his blessings, he disappeared from them. And they were grief stricken.
✞What you have read up to this point is the chronicle of not a monk but the account of [the blessed woman] St. Nasahit who lived concealed as a man.
✞Though the Saint was a daughter of one of the royals of Rome, she run away from the palace at the age of 12 years for the sake of the love of the Lord. And as the soldiers of her father and monks were looking for her, she lived resembling a man in hiding in the Monastery of Abba Macarius.
✞And after she lived wandering from one monastery to the other, because the grace of God was abundant in her, her voice and countenance became distinguished as God is wondrous upon the saints. And when St. Nasahit departed on this day, wandering fathers entombed her.
✞✞✞May the God of the Saints send us His light and love. And may He grant from the blessings of His beloved.✞✞✞ Annual feasts celebrated on the 14th of Tahisas
Memhir Esuendale:
#Feasts of #Tahisas_14
✞✞✞On this day we celebrate the Day of Light, start the Week of Light and commemorate the Great Martyr Saint Mar Behnam and Saint Nasahit✞✞✞
✞✞✞In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God. Amen!✞✞✞
✞✞✞Day of Light✞✞✞
=>The Holy Church basing the Holy Bible and according to the teachings of St. Yared (Jared) calls this day, Tahisas 14 (December 23) as “The Day of Light” and the week (from Tahisas 14 to 20 – December 23 - 29 ) that follows as “The Week of Light”.
✞”Light” by itself is the name of God and His nature as well. “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” 1 John 1:5
✞On this day the Church teaches, making “Light” as a center,
1. That God is light. (1 John 1:5)
2. That our Creator, on the first day of creation (Sunday), when the Devil caused disorder amongst the Holy Angels, had created light saying, “Let there be light”. (Gen. 1:2, Hexameron)
3. That the Prophets, the Fathers, have said audibly when tribulations became unbearable upon them, “O send out thy light”. (Ps. 43:3)
4. That God the Son (The True Light), one of the Trine, Who had heard their pleas, came to this world. (Luke 1:26-)
5. That when He said, “I am the light of the world” He has told us that He is in essence light. (John 9:5)
6. That He has revealed His ‘Divine Light’. (Matt. 17:1)
7. That He has made/ given the Gospel, a law of light, for/to us. (1 John 2:9)
8. That the Virgin – our Lady is light and the Mother of Light. (Luke 1:26, Rev. 12:1)
9. That the saints are called light. (Matt. 5:14)
10. That we are all commanded to shine before everyone. (Matt. 5:16) Hence, all these concepts are remembered [on this day and in the coming week].
✞Since, our Creator, Christ, has removed darkness from us with His mercy, thus beseeching not to return to darkness we should praise Him.
“Christ – light, Who removed darkness
Who, sited upon the Cherubim, sees the Abyss
You are praised and Most High thence”
(Melkea Iyesus – Doxology/Hymn to Jesus)
✞✞✞Saint Mar Behnam the Martyr✞✞✞
=>The Martyr is one of the major saints that have a great place in the Church. And he is one of the saints that are drawn in the churches. His was from a place called Ator (Assur) (in Persia) and his father was known as Sinharib (Senharib II), an Emperor.
✞Even though his mother was a Christian, because of fear, she did not teach her 2 children (Mar Behnam and Sarah) about Christianity. And when the 2 became grown, they started to follow their father, the Emperor, when he went to different places. And their mother prayed in heartache. Then, immediately, the youthful Sarah was stricken with leprosy/vitiligo.
✞And there were none who could heal her. As Mar Behnam was a valiant young man, he used to lead 40 military commanders. And in that era, the 4th century, when he went out for hunting with his 40 entourages to the wilderness, he met an ascetic (a hermit) named Abba Mathias (Mar Mattai).
✞The ascetic was a father that had lived in the desert for many years. And because his body was covered with hair, Mar Behanm frightened, tried to fled but the righteous told him, “Do not fear my child! I am a mere man, a creation of Christ, as you are.”
✞Then, the Saint asked, “Who is Christ?” Thus, Abba Mathias told him about the mystery of Christianity from its foundation and told him about Christ’s Divinity.
✞St. Mar Behnam then responded with, “So that I believe Christ is God, heal my sister.” And the father told him to bring her and he did. When the righteous then prayed and stamped on the ground, it brought forth water. And he said, “In faith, in the name of the Trinity be baptized”.
✞And after the Saint, his sister and the 40 military commanders came out of the spring, Sarah was healed. And they were completely joyous. And after they returned, St. Mar Behnam, his mother, his sister and his 40 entourage started worshipping Christ.✞But when the Emperor Senharib heard, he was infuriated. And they fled to a mountain.
