Haiti violence: US announces charter flight as clashes continue The US State Department has announced a charter flight for its citizens stranded in Haiti, as gang violence and hunger grip the impoverished country. Police in the capital Port-au-Prince are trying to recapture areas held by notorious gang leader Jimmy Chérizier. Chérizier, known as "Barbecue", has a stronghold in the Delmas neighbourhood and police are trying to arrest him. On Saturday police spokesman Lionel Lazarre said several "bandits" had been killed in the operation. Mr Lazarre said police units entered the neighbourhood on Friday evening. read more

Secret classes to counter Russian brainwashing in occupied Ukraine Like millions of other Ukrainians, in the early weeks of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Nataliia (not her real name) was forced from her home. She couldn't tolerate living under Russian occupation in her southern hometown of Melitopol, and felt she would be more useful in territory still controlled by Ukraine. But Nataliia didn't just leave her home and relatives behind, she also surrendered her profession, giving up her job of 20 years as a teacher. Gaza aid reaches shore in first sea delivery The first ship towing a barge of humanitarian aid to Gaza has unloaded supplies on to the shore. The Spanish ship Open Arms left Cyprus on Tuesday with 200 tonnes of food desperately needed for Gaza, which the UN says is on the brink of famine. Videos posted online show a crane moving crates from the barge to lorries waiting on a purpose-built jetty. It marks the start of a trial to see if sea deliveries are effective, after air and land deliveries proved difficult. read more

Dutch anti-Islam populist Geert Wilders abandons PM bid Dutch anti-Islam populist leader Geert Wilders has abandoned his bid to become prime minister, despite his party's dramatic victory in the 2023 elections. "I can only become prime minister if ALL parties in the coalition support it. That was not the case," he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. His Freedom Party (PVV) won the most votes last year - but needed support of other parties to form a coalition. Talks with three other parties over the shape of a new government are ongoing. read more

John Barnett: Boeing whistleblower 'hoped to change its culture', family says Lawyers for the Boeing employee-turned-whistleblower found dead by apparent suicide have hailed him as "a brave, honest man of the highest integrity". Authorities are currently investigating the death of John Barnett, from what appeared to be a self-inflicted wound. Mr Barnett retired after working more than 30 years at Boeing in 2017. He was giving evidence in a lawsuit against the company before his death. Two of his attorneys called on police to fully investigate how he had died. read more

Gaza medics tell BBC that Israeli troops beat and humiliated them after hospital raid Palestinian medical staff in Gaza have told the BBC they were blindfolded, detained, forced to strip and repeatedly beaten by Israeli troops after a raid at their hospital last month. Ahmed Abu Sabha, a doctor at Nasser hospital, described being held for a week in detention, where, he said, muzzled dogs were set upon him and his hand was broken by an Israeli soldier. His account closely matches those of two other medics who wanted to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals. read more

Trump will not give a penny to Ukraine - Hungary PM Orban Donald Trump will not fund Ukraine's fight against Russia's invasion if he is elected US president again, Hungarian PM Viktor Orban has said. "He will not give a penny in the Ukraine-Russia war. That is why the war will end," the conservative premier said after meeting Mr Trump in Florida. The former US president has pledged to end the war "within 24 hours" if elected - but provided no details. Mr Orban is openly backing his long-term ally in the 2024 White House race. read more

US military ship heading to Gaza to build port A US military ship is sailing towards the Middle East, carrying equipment to build a temporary pier off the coast of Gaza, the army says. The support ship, General Frank S Besson, set sail from a military base in the state of Virginia on Saturday. It comes after President Joe Biden said the US would build the floating harbour to help get aid into Gaza by sea. The UN has warned that famine in the Gaza Strip is "almost inevitable" and children are starving to death. read more

Dragon Ball: Japan manga creator Akira Toriyama dies The creator of Dragon Ball, one of the most influential and best-selling Japanese comics of all time, has died at 68. Akira Toriyama suffered an acute subdural hematoma, a type of bleeding near the brain, his studio said Friday. Dragon Ball is hugely popular around the world and the comic series has also spawned cartoon and film versions. Fans have paid tribute to Mr Toriyama for creating characters that have become a part of their childhood. The Dragon Ball comic series debuted in 1984. It follows a boy named Son Goku in his quest to collect magical dragon balls to defend Earth against alien humanoids called Saiyans. read more

Haiti gang leader threatens 'civil war' if PM does not resign The gang leader behind the violence blighting the Haitian capital has warned there will be a "civil war" if Haiti's prime minister, Ariel Henry, does not step down. Jimmy "Barbecue" Chérizier made the threat as members of his gang tried to seize the capital's airport to stop Mr Henry from returning from abroad. Unrest has spread to other cities with a prison riot reported in Jacmel. Thousands have been displaced by the violence. read more

Children starving to death in northern Gaza - WHO Children are dying of starvation in northern Gaza, the World Health Organization (WHO) chief says. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the agency's visits over the weekend to the Al-Awda and Kamal Adwan hospitals were the first since early October. In a post on social media, he spoke of "grim findings". A lack of food resulted in the deaths of 10 children and "severe levels of malnutrition", while hospital buildings have been destroyed, he wrote. read more

Israel-Gaza war: Kamala Harris urges more aid for starving Gazans US Vice-President Kamala Harris says people in Gaza "are starving" and has urged Israel to "significantly increase the flow of aid" there. She said "there must be an immediate ceasefire for at least the next six weeks", which would "get the [Israeli] hostages out". Earlier, Israel did not attend truce talks in Egypt, saying Hamas was not giving a list of hostages still alive. Hamas told the BBC it was unable to do so because of the Israeli bombing. read more

Haiti violence: Gangs free 4,000 inmates in mass jailbreak Armed gangs have stormed the main prison in Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince, releasing many inmates. The vast majority of about 4,000 men held there have now escaped, a local journalist told BBC News. Among those detained were gang members charged in connection with the 2021 killing of President Jovenel Moïse. Violence in Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas, has worsened in recent years. Bad blood over Singapore Taylor Swift Eras tour subsidies In the glitzy Asian city-state of Singapore, the sequins are out, limousines polished and hotel pillows plumped. The city's hosting Taylor Swift's Eras tour this week - an honour, but one that has come at a cost. That price was initially reported to be as high as S$24 million (£14m; $18m) for the six shows to be exclusive to the South East Asian country. Culture minister Edwin Tong has since told Singapore's CNA the figure was "nowhere as high" - although he still refused to be drawn on the exact figure. Israel Gaza: Large number of gunshot wounds among those injured in aid convoy rush - UN Many of the people treated for injuries following a rush on an aid convoy in Gaza on Thursday suffered gunshot wounds, the UN has said. UN observers visited Gaza City's al-Shifa Hospital and saw some of the roughly 200 people still being treated. Hamas, which governs Gaza, has accused Israel of firing at civilians, but Israel said most died in a stampede after its troops fired warning shots. Leaders around the world have called for a full investigation. read more

Trump and Biden projected to win Michigan primaries President Joe Biden is projected to win Michigan's Democratic presidential primary comfortably, though thousands of people sent a protest vote during the contest. Grassroots organisations urged Democrats to vote "uncommitted" rather than cast a ballot for the president because of his stance towards Israel's war in Gaza. With 24% of the votes counted, more than 30,000 had chosen "uncommitted". Mr Biden had received 80% of the vote. read more

He told tens of thousands of supporters in São Paulo that coup allegations against him were a "lie".
