Good morning, folks, and back in reality once again. There have been 13 gubernatorial elections in Virginia since 1977. TWELVE of those have been won by the party NOT in the White House. The only exception to this pattern was the loss of Ken Cuccinelli in 2013 after Obama was reelected, and he was within 2.5% and there was a libertarian that sucked up 6.5% of the vote. What happened last night was about as standard as it gets and if you listened to honest people who can do 20 minutes of research before running their mouths you’d be a lot less upset. With this said, there are plenty of things within election law that make this sort of winning even easier. You also would need to square the slashing of federal jobs with why you think Republicans should have won in a state increasingly propped up by the federal government. I’m not even sure they would have had to cheat at all at this rate.

Getting to you a year ahead of time. In 20 of 23 midterm elections since 1934, the President’s party has lost seats. Start managing expectations now. A lot can happen in a year but there’s a good reason I don’t do polls.

The cheating is mostly going on on the front end by now. That’s why the courts don’t allow standing for candidates to challenge stuff before the elections. Early voting is not for access. It is for allowing time to gather up as many mail-in ballots as possible that are laying around or earmarked for collection. Math shows you consistently without tens of thousands of votes where either candidate is likely to wind up. If you’re expecting to wind up 40,000 short, then your collection gang’s quota is going to be 60-70,000, or enough to avoid recounts. Front loading keeps you from getting caught, rather than bringing in trucks full of ballots, and often slides right in there with what the law permits. You wouldn’t even know there is something off if not for the math.

And as I typed that, Jay Jones is project winner of Virginia AG race. I am quite confident they’ve been stuffing ballots for weeks. But there are going to be more than a million Virginians totally OK with the state’s top law enforcement officer texting his fantasies to kill kids.
