UK satellites face weekly Russian interference British military satellites are being shadowed and jammed by Russia almost every week, UK Space Command chief Maj Gen Paul Tedman revealed. He said Moscow uses both satellites and ground-based systems to gather intelligence and disrupt UK space assets. While the US sees China as the main long-term space rival, Tedman views Russia as the immediate threat. The UK, with just six dedicated satellites, relies heavily on US systems for defence and monitoring. London has pledged £1bn for integrated air and missile defence, including space security, but still lags behind allies in spending. INSIDER | UK

Rap Mogul Diddy Asks Judge for Second Chance On the eve of his sentencing, Sean “Diddy” Combs wrote to Judge Arun Subramanian apologising for his crimes and claiming sobriety after 13 months in jail. Convicted of two prostitution charges, he risks up to 20 years, though prosecutors seek a minimum of 11. In his letter, Combs said he has been “humbled and broken,” teaching inmates business classes and describing himself as “reborn.” But accusers, including Cassie Ventura, told the judge they fear his revenge. Ventura called him a “power-hungry manipulative man” and urged a long sentence. INSIDER | UK

Coroner: Conspiracy Theorist Mother Influenced Daughter to Reject Chemo Paloma Shemirani, a Cambridge graduate, died from untreated lymphoma after being persuaded by her mother, ex-nurse and anti-vaccine activist Kate Shemirani, to refuse chemotherapy. Instead, Paloma followed alternative therapies, including five daily coffee enemas. Coroner Catherine Wood ruled her mother’s influence “contributed more than minimally” to her death, stressing that standard treatment could have offered an 80% cure rate. The coroner also noted “complicated and dysfunctional” family dynamics. Paloma’s brothers condemned their mother, saying she obstructed her daughter from receiving life-saving treatment. INSIDER | UK

White House Warns of Imminent Layoffs as Shutdown Enters Day Two The White House has warned that mass layoffs of federal workers are “imminent” as the government shutdown drags into its second day. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said job cuts could come within 48 hours, while Vice-President JD Vance accused Democrats of “playing political games.” The shutdown began after Republicans and Democrats failed to agree on a spending plan. Around 750,000 federal workers could be placed on unpaid leave, with some “non-essential” employees already furloughed. President Trump has urged Republicans to use the crisis to push through permanent cuts, even blocking $18bn in infrastructure funding for New York City. The next vote on a temporary spending bill is expected Friday, but both sides remain locked in a standoff over healthcare subsidies. INSIDER | UK

US Debates Sending Long-Range Missiles to Ukraine Ukraine’s push for Tomahawk missiles is gaining traction in Washington. JD Vance confirmed discussions are ongoing, while Keith Kellogg indicated Trump has already approved strikes within Russia. Kyiv says long-range capability is key to halting Moscow’s drone and missile campaigns, which have intensified with new technology that bypasses jamming. Alongside Tomahawks, Ukraine seeks at least 10 Patriot air defence systems. For now, its defence industry is producing more drones and artillery but still relies heavily on Western supplies. “Strengthening our skies is Europe’s security,” Havryliuk said. INSIDER | UK

Russia’s Shadow Hangs Over Moldova’s Election As Moldovans prepare to vote, evidence has emerged of large-scale Russian interference, from vote buying to funding disinformation networks tied to fugitive oligarch Ilan Șor. Police detained over 100 men linked to alleged GRU-backed training in Serbia, raising fears of post-election unrest. The ruling PAS party is campaigning on a strong pro-EU platform, warning that the alternative is “handing the country to Russia.” Opposition leader Igor Dodon rejects the claims and says he would restore cheap gas imports from Moscow. Russia Rejects NATO Threat Claims, Criticizes West at UN Russian FM Sergei Lavrov told the UN that Moscow does not plan to attack EU or NATO countries, dismissing Western warnings as “provocations.” He promised a firm response to any aggression against Russia. Lavrov condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank, warning of regional collapse, and accused the West of undermining diplomacy on Iran by reimposing sanctions. His remarks followed drone incidents in Denmark, airspace violations over Estonia and Poland, and Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. INSIDER | UK

From Hostel Corridors to Ig Nobel Glory: India’s Stinky Shoe Science In Delhi, a design professor and his former student asked a simple question: why are shoes left outside? The answer wasn’t space but smell. Surveying 149 students, they confirmed odour, not storage, was the problem. Their solution: a UVC light-equipped rack that neutralises the bacteria Kytococcus sedentarius. Tests on athletes’ shoes showed that just a few minutes of exposure erased the “rotten-cheese” stench — provided the timing was right. Their offbeat study earned them this year’s Ig Nobel Prize, joining winners who painted cows and studied garlic’s effect on breast milk. INSIDER | UK

Iran Faces Renewed UN Sanctions Over Nuclear Dispute The E3 powers — UK, France and Germany — reimposed UN sanctions on Iran, accusing it of repeated violations of the 2015 nuclear deal. The decision follows Tehran’s suspension of IAEA inspections after US and Israeli strikes, and its refusal to address enriched uranium concerns. President Pezeshkian rejected the sanctions as “illegal” and warned they threaten future talks. Israel welcomed the move, urging global pressure to block Iran’s path to nuclear weapons. INSIDER | UK

Poland, Denmark, Estonia and Romania reported Russian drones near or inside their airspace, prompting Nato to step up Baltic surveillance. Moscow denies targeting NATO but warned against “provocations.” INSIDER | UK

Iran Pushes Ahead With Nuclear Site Reconstruction New high-resolution satellite images indicate Iran has begun rebuilding parts of its Natanz and Fordo nuclear facilities following joint US-Israeli strikes in June. At Natanz, photos from 18 September show heavy machinery digging and extending a secured perimeter south of the site. Fordo imagery dated 23 September shows six craters from US strikes now covered, while blocked tunnel entrances remain. Despite the attacks, Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation head Mohammad Eslami stated that Tehran is determined to restore its nuclear capabilities. INSIDER | UK

E. coli’s dominance in biotechnology challenged by rivals E. coli is widely used to produce medicines and chemicals, now including paracetamol from plastic waste. Its ease of growth and adaptability make it a staple in labs and industry. However, researchers like Paul Jensen and Buz Barstow argue the field should diversify, pointing to microbes such as Vibrio natriegens, which grows twice as fast and may help tackle sustainability challenges. Yet without the genetic tools and proof of scale, E. coli remains the mainstay. INSIDER | UK

He faces other ongoing cases, including a 2024 conviction for overspending and a 2021 bribery sentence. His wife, Carla Bruni, has also faced charges linked to the Libya affair. INSIDER | UK
