At the bottom of the page, where "unknown southern lands" were typically depicted, a continent with clear coastlines, rivers, mountains, and coastal settlements is visible. Modern researchers who compared the map with the topography of Antarctica came to a startling conclusion: the contours correspond to the subglacial terrain known only from 20th-century satellite data. How could a 16th-century cartographer have known what Antarctica looked like beneath the ice? If the map indeed reflects actual geography, then either there was no ice sheet at the time, or the author used ancient sources preserving knowledge from a pre-flood civilization.
