An elderly woman has died after being hit by a car on her way to a local shop. The woman, aged 81, was hit by a dark-coloured car, which failed to stop, in Longmoor Lane, Fazakerley, Liverpool, at about 4.15pm on Friday. Officers said the woman died a short time later in Aintree Hospital after suffering serious injuries. Merseyside Police are searching for the driver.

Nigel Farage sang antisemitic songs to Jewish schoolmates - and had a "big issue with anyone called Patel", a former schoolfriend has claimed. Jean-Pierre Lihou, 61, was initially friends with the Reform UK leader when he arrived at Dulwich College in the 1970s, at the time when Mr Farage is accused of saying antisemitic and other racist remarks by more than a dozen pupils.

Take Back Power, which describes itself as a new non-violent civil-resistance group, claimed it was behind the act. "Democracy has crumbled", one protester shouted. Another added: "Britain is broken. We've come here to the jewels of the nation to take back power."

Part of the Tower of London has been closed following reports of criminal damage to a display case containing the Imperial State Crown, part of the Crown Jewels. Police said four protesters had been arrested following the incident just before 10am on Saturday. They said it was reported that food had been thrown onto the case before two protesters left the scene. Footage of the incident appears to show one demonstrator removing the large foil tray of apple crumble from a bag and slamming it against the glass. Meanwhile, another pours a tub of bright yellow custard on the front of the case. "Officers worked closely with City of London Police and security officers and four people have been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage. They have taken into custody," officers said. "The Tower has been closed to the public while the police investigation continues."

Morton, who was a Labour rising star on Moray council, confessed in 2017 to possessing indecent pictures of girls under 15 and of a couple having sex with a dog. Ms Duncan-Glancy resigned as Labour’s education spokeswoman last night when it emerged they were in frequent contact, including dinner and drinks to celebrate the MSP’s birthday.

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy has suggested it could be beneficial for the UK to consider re-entering a customs union with the EU. "It's self-evident that leaving the European Union badly damaged our economy, took us out of an important marketplace and created serious friction, that untruths were being peddled by those that thought exiting the EU would be a good thing," Mr Lammy told the News Agents podcast. Ramsay El-Nakla, 37, the brother-in-law of former first minister Humza Yousaf, is on trial at the High Court in Edinburgh along with co-accused Stephen Stewart, 52, Jennifer Souter, 39, and Victoria McGowan, 43. It follows the death of a man who fell from a window in a property on Morgan Street, Dundee, after allegedly being threatened. El-Nakla is accused of extortion and dealing class A drugs, but does not face a charge in relation to the alleged killing of Ryan Munro on January 10, 2024.

The police watchdog says it is investigating after a teenager who was tasered by an officer on a motorway was fatally hit by a car. Logan Smith, 18, was being taken to hospital in an ambulance at about 11pm on Sunday when the vehicle stopped on the hard shoulder of the M5 in Somerset. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said the vehicle stopped on the northbound carriageway "due to the concerns of ambulance staff". Mr Smith got out of the ambulance near the junction for Weston-super-Mare and "entered the live lanes of the motorway", the watchdog added. Police were called and an officer arrived at the scene, with bodycam footage showing the officer discharging their Taser, causing the teenager to fall to the ground. "Soon afterwards" Mr Smith was struck by a car travelling on the southbound carriageway, the IOPC said.
