Hero of the Week: January 27, 2025: The Palestinian Press Corps This week, we honor the heroic members of the Palestinian press corps, who have courageously continued to tell the world the truth about the Gaza genocide in the face of daunting challenges, not least of which is the unprecedented number of journalists among their own ranks killed in Israel’s attacks. In 2023 alone, almost three out of four journalists killed worldwide were Palestinians killed post-October 7. In its assessment this month of the Palestinian journalist casualties, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ)—an independent nonprofit that defends journalists’ right “to report the news safely and without fear of reprisal”—describes the conflict as “the deadliest period for journalists since CPJ began gathering data in 1992.” Al Jazeeera agrees: “Simply put, this has been the worst conflict for journalists—ever.” The deliberate targeting of journalists, who are civilians, is a war crime. CPJ’s research unequivocally confirms a subset of the Palestinian journalist killings as murders, and the organization is investigating numerous other deaths for “possible targeting.” There are also many first-hand accounts from Palestinian reporters of deliberate targeting, even when wearing “Press” vests and traveling in vehicles marked as such. On December 26, 2024, an Israeli attack in central Gaza on a broadcast van displaying “press” in large red lettering killed five Palestinian journalists who were covering events at a nearby refugee camp hospital. Movie of the Week: January 27, 2025: Deep Rising As we witness the accelerating grab for our planet’s land and mineral resources in places like Western North Carolina, and we hear the new president make unsubtle hints about Canada and Greenland, the 2023 documentary Deep Rising calls attention to the “Wild West” race to mine deep seabed mineral resources in international waters. The question posed to the viewer is whether nodules containing rare-earth minerals such as cobalt and nickel should be harvested from the deep seabed; importantly, the film also asks who should run such operations and enjoy the benefits. Viewers learn some interesting history, including the fact that Lockheed Martin led a consortium back in the 1970s to explore deep-sea mining possibilities. (Lockheed held onto its deep-sea mining subsidiary, UK Seabed Resources, until 2023, when it sold it to a Norwegian firm.) In 1982, the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea established the obscure International Seabed Authority (ISA), putting ISA in charge of deep seabed regulations (such as they are) and mineral rights. Pushback of the Week: January 27, 2025: West Virginia Executive Order on Vaccine Exemptions Within 24 hours of taking office this month, West Virginia’s new governor Patrick Morrisey—elected as governor after a dozen years as attorney general—signed Executive Order No. 7-25 providing for religious and conscientious exemptions from mandatory vaccines for schoolchildren. In support of his action, Morrisey cited West Virginia’s Equal Protection for Religion Act passed in 2023 and the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Morrisey’s executive order puts a decisive end to a health freedom battle that has spanned decades. Just last year, West Virginia’s Republican-majority legislature tried to pass a less ambitious bill that would have allowed religious exemptions in virtual, private, and parochial schools, but Morrisey’s predecessor vetoed it. Morrisey is now encouraging state lawmakers to codify his executive order into law with legislation. Movie of the Week: January 20, 2025: Nineteen Eighty-Four In 1954, the BBC’s Sunday Night Theatre televised a production of George Orwell’s famous 1949 novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four. The BBC had purchased the television rights almost as soon as the novel was published. Although a British Film Institute poll conducted in the year 2000 ranked Nineteen Eighty-Four among the 100 greatest British television programs of the 20th century, the 1954 production—faithful to Orwell’s novelistic vision and still from the era of black-and-white TV—stirred up considerable controversy at the time. Its depiction of unbridled totalitarianism reportedly shocked many viewers, who decried the production’s “sheer, stark, unadulterated horror” as a “debasement” of the BBC’s television service.
