Two years into Russia's invasion, exhausted Ukrainians refuse to give up
It translates as "crooked horn", but President Zelensky calls Kryvyi Rih his "big soul and heart".
He credits this gritty, industrial city with moulding his character. He grew up in a sprawling block of flats known as the Anthill.
When you stand in front of this towering structure, Volodymyr Zelensky's journey from this setting to wartime leader feels remarkable. read more

Intuitive Machines: US company makes historic Moon landing
An American company has made history by becoming the first commercial outfit to put a spacecraft on the Moon.
Houston-based Intuitive Machines landed its Odysseus robot near the lunar south pole.
It took some minutes for controllers to establish that the craft was down, but eventually a signal was received.
"What we can confirm, without a doubt, is our equipment is on the surface of the Moon and we are transmitting," flight director Tim Crain announced.
Staff at the company cheered and clapped at the news. read more

Israel Gaza: China condemns US veto of call for immediate ceasefire at UN
China has sharply criticised the US for vetoing a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
Beijing said the move sent the "wrong message" and effectively gave a "green light to the continued slaughter".
The White House said the Algerian-proposed resolution would "jeopardise" talks to end the war.
The US has proposed its own temporary ceasefire resolution, which also warned Israel not to invade the city of Rafah. read more

Israel indicates March deadline for Gaza ground offensive in Rafah
Israeli war cabinet member Benny Gantz has warned that unless Hamas frees all hostages held in Gaza by 10 March an offensive will be launched in Rafah.
It is the first time Israel has said when its troops might enter Gaza's overcrowded southern city.
Global opposition is growing to such an attack in Rafah, where some 1.5 million Palestinians are sheltering.
Earlier, the UN public health agency said a key Gaza hospital had ceased to function following an Israeli raid. read more

Papua New Guinea ambush: More than 60 shot dead in Highlands region
At least 64 people have died in an ambush in Papua New Guinea's remote Highlands region.
The victims were shot dead during a tribal dispute in the Enga province over the weekend, a national police spokesman told the BBC.
The Highlands area has long struggled with violence, but these killings are believed to be the worst in years.
An influx of illegal firearms have made clashes more deadly and fuelled a cycle of violence. read more

Prabowo Subianto: The tainted ex-military chief who will be Indonesia's new leader
After two failed attempts, Prabowo Subianto has finally clawed his way into Indonesia's ultimate seat of power.
The ex-military general, accused of rights abuses and war crimes during the dark days of the Suharto regime, has triumphed in a modern-day democratic vote.
Gone were the inflammatory, nationalist comments of his previous presidential runs; in the 2024 election he sold himself as a cute grandpa on TikTok, flashing heart signs and doddering around with a viral dance.
It worked for younger voters - a generation poorly informed of the country's past under a military dictatorship. read more

Ukraine Russia war: US warns Avdiivka could fall
The US has warned that Russia could seize Ukraine's key eastern town of Avdiivka - the scene of some of the fiercest fighting in recent months.
"Avdiivka is at risk of falling into Russian control," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said, citing Ukraine's ammunition shortages.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed to do everything to "save as many Ukrainian lives as possible".
Russian troops have made gains in Avdiivka, threatening to encircle it. read more

Alejandro Mayorkas: House votes to impeach homeland security secretary
The House of Representatives has narrowly voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, making him the first cabinet member to face impeachment in nearly 150 years.
Many Republicans blame Mr Mayorkas for an unprecedented influx of migrants at the US-Mexico border.
The Republican-led chamber voted 214 to 213 for the measure, after the first attempt failed last week.
The issue now heads to the Democratic-led Senate, where it is likely to fail. read more

Israel Gaza: Palestinians sheltering in Rafah fear impending offensive
A Palestinian doctor in Rafah has said people are terrified about the prospect of an Israeli ground offensive in Gaza's southern-most city, after a night of some of the worst air strikes he has experienced since arriving there.
In a series of messages sent to the BBC on Monday, Dr Ahmed Abuibaid described the air strikes as incessant and everywhere.
"[The] most popular question on people's minds is, where can we go?" he said. read more

Israel rescues two hostages in Rafah amid deadly strikes
Israel says two male Israeli hostages have been rescued in a raid in Rafah, amid reports of heavy Israeli air strikes on the southern Gazan city.
The Israeli military says the two men are in "good medical condition".
Earlier, the Palestine Red Crescent Society said Rafah was under attack. Some 1.5 million people are sheltering in the city.
It follows warnings from the international community over Israel's planned offensive there.
Israel said it had conducted strikes in southern Gaza, with the Hamas-run health ministry reporting dozens of deaths. read more

Hind Rajab, 6, found dead in Gaza days after phone calls for help
A six-year-old girl who went missing in Gaza City last month has been found dead, along with several of her relatives and two paramedics who tried to save her, after they appear to have come under fire from Israeli tanks.
Hind Rajab was fleeing the city in a car with her aunt, uncle and three cousins at the time.
Audio recordings of calls between Hind and emergency call operators suggest that the six-year-old was the only one left alive in the car, hiding from Israeli forces among the bodies of her relatives. read more

Gaza residents surviving off animal feed and rice as food dwindles
People living in the isolated north of Gaza have told the BBC that children are going without food for days, as aid convoys are increasingly denied permits to enter. Some residents have resorted to grinding animal feed into flour to survive, but even stocks of those grains are now dwindling, they say.
People have also described digging down into the soil to access water pipes, for drinking and washing.
The UN has warned that acute malnutrition among young children in the north has risen sharply, and is now above the critical threshold of 15%. read more

Indonesia election: An 'impossible' country tests its hard-won democracy
Budiman Sujatmiko has lost none of the passion that he used to show as one of the boldest student opponents of Suharto, the soft-spoken but ruthless dictator who ruled Indonesia for 32 years.
"In the 1990s our challenge was authoritarianism. We needed democracy. Today our challenge is inequality and backwardness," Budiman says in his campaign office, ahead of Indonesia's presidential race on 14 February.
In a scarcely believable twist, Budiman is now a spokesman for Prabowo Subianto - the frontrunner in the race, Suharto's son-in-law and the man who epitomises that authoritarian era. The former special forces commander has been accused of a string of human rights violations, and was sacked by the army in 1998. read more

Prabowo Subianto: Indonesia's 'cuddly grandpa' with a bloody past
Mr Prabowo's running mate is Mr Widodo's eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka. It's a choice that many see as a tacit blessing by the president, who is yet to endorse anyone, including his own party's candidate, Mr Pranowo.
But a Prabowo presidency is also alarming to many, who say he has never been held accountable for the alleged abduction and killing of pro-democracy student activists decades ago.
A young voter, who did not wish to be named, says she is "terrified" he will win: "If he could be an accomplice of silencing voices then he will be silencing those voices now if he gets elected."
"Cuteness" hardly makes an eligible leader, she says. "If that's how you think a leader should be, then you should elect kittens." read more

Pakistan elections 2024: Polls close in vote marred by internet cut
Polls have closed in Pakistan after the authorities suspended mobile calls and data while millions voted for a new government in a controversial election.
The interior ministry said incidents of terrorism made the measure necessary.
The election comes almost two years after the previous prime minister, cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, was ousted in a no-confidence vote.
Three-time PM Nawaz Sharif was on the ballot in what many analysts say is Pakistan's least credible election yet. read more

Mr Netanyahu said negotiations with the group were "not going anywhere" and described their terms as "bizarre".
Talks are continuing to try to reach some sort of deal. read more

King Charles has been diagnosed with a form of cancer, says Buckingham Palace.
The type of cancer has not been revealed - it is not prostate cancer, but was discovered during his recent treatment for an enlarged prostate.

The Monarch, 75, "remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible," it added. read more
