*RBI Guv Malhotra signals rates to stay low for 'long period': Report*
India's central bank governor Sanjay Malhotra expects the country's interest rates to remain low for a "long period", he told the Financial Times in an interview published on Wednesday. The Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) projections suggested rates "should remain low for a long period of time", Malhotra told the newspaper. Malhotra said the RBI's economic forecast had not taken into account the potential effect of trade agreements currently under negotiation, which if sealed would raise India's economic growth. "The impact of the US trade deal could be as much as about half a percentage point," he told the FT. Malhotra told the FT that the most recent headline GDP figure "was surprising" and that the RBI, which had predicted 7 per cent annual growth in the July-September quarter had to "improve our forecasting". The South Asian economy expanded at a sharper-than-expected clip of 8.2 per cent in the July-September quarter, but growth is expected to slow as the full impact of up to 50 per cent tariffs imposed by the US hit exports and sectors from textiles to chemicals.

*Rupee slips past 91 against dollar amid FPI outflows, riskoff trade*
The rupee breached the 91-per-dollar mark to hit a fresh low of 91.09 on Tuesday, pressured by persistent foreign outflow, riskoff trade in global markets, and delay in India-US trade agreement, dealers said.It strengthened marginally towards the end of the session to settle at 91.03 per dollar, compared with its previous close of 90.73. The local currency slid from 90 to 91 per dollar in just nine trading sessions. It has slipped 1.26 per cent against the greenback in the past five sessions alone. So far in 2025, the unit is the worst-performing Asian currency, with a depreciation of 5.95 per cent. In a written reply in Parliament on Tuesday, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary attributed the sliding value of the local currency to widening trade deficit and the ongoing developments related to the India-US trade agreement. He said the rupee is market-determined, with no target, level, or band prescribed for the exchange rate. βThe RBI continuously monitors developments in the foreign exchange market and intervenes only to address episodes of excessive volatility,β Chaudhary said. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have withdrawn more than $2 billion in the first two weeks of December alone, putting the month among the largest episodes of net outflows seen this year.

*Rupee hits record low for third straight session on US-India deal jitters*
The rupee hit a new low for a third consecutive trading session on Monday, touching an intraday low of 90.80 per dollar, as uncertainty surrounding the India-US trade deal continued to weigh on the domestic currency, dealers said. The Indian currency pared some losses towards the end of the session after the countryβs trade deficit narrowed to a five-month low of $24.53 billion in November, with exports rising to a three-and-a-half-year high. The rupee settled at 90.73 per dollar β a fresh closing low β compared with 90.42 per dollar on Friday. It is the worst-performing currency in Asia in 2025 so far, down 5.64 per cent against the dollar. In December alone, the domestic currency has depreciated 1.41 per cent. Despite the positive trade data, the rupee is likely to remain under pressure amid prevailing risk-averse sentiment, strong dollar demand from importers and persistent foreign outflows, which have dented investor confidence, dealers said. βPositive trade data is just a fleeting comfort,β said a dealer with a private bank. βIt (rupee) will continue to see a gradual depreciation in the absence of a US-India trade deal. Also, the RBI (Reserve Bank of India) is missing from the market.β

*Cabinet clears nuclear energy Bill to open sector to private participation*
The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday approved the nuclear energy Bill that seeks to introduce legislative amendments for opening up the civil nuclear power sector for private participation, according to sources. The Bill is likely to pave the way for amending two existing legislations β the Atomic Energy Act 1962, and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage (CLND) Act 2010 β tweaking the clauses that are believed to be deterring private companies, including foreign technology and equipment suppliers, from participating in the sector. This is part of the governmentβs efforts for reaching 100 Gigawatt (Gw) nuclear power capacity by 2047. The legislative amendments will also facilitate the implementation of the Nuclear Energy Mission announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her Budget speech in February. The Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy (SHANTI) Bill was listed as part of the legislative agenda of the ongoing Parliament session. Union Minister Jitendra Singh had said in Parliament last week that the Bill is at an advanced stage of drafting, and that final comments from ministries are being incorporated.

*Rupee hits fresh low on outflows and US trade deal delay; bond yields ease*
The rupee hit a fresh closing low of 90.37 per dollar on Thursday, pressured by foreign outflows from both bonds and equities. Uncertainty around the trade deal with the US also weighed on sentiment. The Indian unit slipped to a fresh intraday low of 90.49 before recovering some losses after the Reserve Bank of India intervened in the foreign exchange market through dollar sales, dealers said. The previous all-time closing low was on December 3 when it hit 90.20. The rupee, which depreciated 0.45 per cent on Thursday, is the worst-performing Asian currency this year, slipping 5.26 per cent against the dollar. βThere were some outflows, and stop losses were triggered,β said a dealer at a state-owned bank. βIn the middle of the day, there was some comment from a government official that a trade deal would happen by the end of March, which put downward pressure. The market was expecting the trade deal to be finalised by December,β he added. Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) V Anantha Nageswaran on Thursday said India and the US have ironed out βmost of their pending differencesβ on trade, and that a formal agreement could be in place by March 2026.

*ADB raises India's growth forecast by 70 bps to 7.2% on consumption boost*
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Wednesday raised Indiaβs growth forecast for the financial year 2026 (FY26) by 70 basis points to 7.2 per cent, citing consumption boost driven by recent tax cuts. However, its growth projection for FY27 remained unchanged at 6.5 per cent. The upward revision by the Manila-based lender comes on the heels of India reporting an impressive 8.2 per cent GDP growth in the second quarter of FY26 (Q2FY26), the fastest in six quarters. βIndiaβs GDP grew by 8.2 per cent in the second quarter of the current fiscal (JulyβSeptember 2025), the fastest in six quarters, supported by robust private consumption despite subdued government spending. The FY26 outlook has been upgraded by 0.7 percentage points to 7.2 per cent, largely due to strong domestic demand aided by recent tax reductions,β said ADB in its latest Asian Development Outlook. The ADB revision aligns with improved sentiment among other global institutions as well. The IMF recently praised Indiaβs growth momentum and fiscal discipline, while Fitch Ratings on Thursday lifted its FY26 forecast to 7.4 per cent from 6.9 per cent earlier, citing stronger consumer spending and better sentiment following GST reforms.

*US President Donald Trump signals action on Indian rice 'dumping'*
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (India time) hinted at fresh tariffs on Indian rice, as a delegation led by Deputy US Trade Representative (USTR) Rick Switzer arrived in New Delhi to assess the proposed trade deal between the two countries. βThey shouldnβt be dumping. I mean, I heard that from others. You canβt do that,β Trump said, adding that he would βtake careβ of the alleged dumping of the commodity in the American market. Trump was speaking at a White House event unveiling $12 billion in fresh support for American farmers. Meryl Kennedy, who runs her familyβs agribusiness, Kennedy Rice Mill in Louisiana, told Trump that rice producers in the southern part of the country are βreally strugglingβ and that countries, including India, are βdumpingβ rice into the US. He further said that America lost half of its car and chip industries because these products were being manufactured in other countries, and previous administrations did not impose tariffs on these imports. βItβs the same thing with rice. Itβll be good and will get solved very quickly. We just need the countries. Just give us the names of the countries. Tariffs, again. It solves the problem in two minutes.β

*EU trade commissioner Sefcovic in Delhi for push on India-EU trade talks*
European Union (EU) Trade Commissioner MaroΕ‘ Ε efΔoviΔ is in New Delhi for a two-day visit aimed at advancing talks on the proposed trade and investment agreements. With the year-end deadline fast approaching, Ε efΔoviΔ held a meeting with his counterpart, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. He also met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. βIn India for a two-day marathon of meetings with Piyush Goyal to advance our trade and investment negotiations. EU-India ties are growing fast β as they should between partners. But weβve only scratched the surface. A commercially meaningful FTA would unlock enormous potential,β Ε efΔoviΔ, who is the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, said on X on Monday. A team, led by the European Commissionβs Director General for Trade and Economic Security Sabine Weyand, is also in India to iron out differences on issues related to both goods and services. During an official round of talks last month, the commerce department had said that both sides saw βsubstantive progressβ across several negotiating areas and were able to narrow down the divergences. Common understanding arrived on many issues. Despite that, both sides still need to iron out differences in certain areas such as steel, carbon tax, automobiles and non-tariff barriers. The proposed deal is in the final stage, where the toughest issues will be taken up. βWe are in the last leg of negotiations. The last leg is the most arduous leg of negotiations because these are the toughest things that are decided at the end,β commerce secretary Rajesh Agrawal had said in the past.

*Petroleum exports to US surge in Oct as labour intensive sectors bear brunt*
Indiaβs petroleum exports to the US surged 94.5 per cent in October to $251.5 million, making it the only major export category to post positive growth, apart from iPhone-led telecom instruments, which jumped 204 per cent during the month. This surge comes even as Indiaβs key refined petroleum markets β including the Netherlands (-15.7 per cent), Australia (-93.1 per cent) and Togo (-62.3 per cent) β sharply cut their purchases from India during the same month. The US has long been a major buyer of Indian petroleum products, accounting for 6.9 per cent ($5.8 billion) of Indiaβs petroleum exports in financial year 2024 (FY24). In October, its share stood at 6.4 per cent. During the month, exports of gems and jewellery continued to be the hardest hit to the US, with shipments of pearls, precious, and semi-precious stones plunging 77.3 per cent. Exports of gold and other precious metal jewellery dropped 51.2 per cent, disaggregated data released by the commerce department showed. *Fitch lifts FY26 growth forecast to 7.4% on stronger consumer demand*
Fitch Ratings raised its growth forecast for the current financial year to 7.4 per cent from its earlier 6.9 per cent, citing increased consumer spending and improved consumer sentiment following goods and services tax (GST) reforms. βPrivate consumer spending is the main driver of growth this year, supported by strong real income dynamics, increased consumer sentiment, and the impact of recently implemented goods and services tax reforms,β Fitch Ratings stated in its latest Global Economic Outlook on Thursday. The upward revision by the global credit rating agency comes days after the economy expanded at its fastest pace in six quarters, growing 8.2 per cent during the July-September (Q2) period, outstripping both official and private forecasts by a significant margin. The outlook further noted that the gap between nominal and real GDP narrowed further in Q2, with the GDP deflator just 0.5 per cent higher compared with the year earlier and growth is expected to ease over the remainder of the financial year. For FY27, Fitch expects growth to ease to 6.4 per cent, closer to its estimate of potential, with domestic demandβparticularly consumer spendingβremaining the key driver. Public investment growth is likely to moderate, while private investment should pick up in the second half of FY27 as financial conditions loosen, it said.
